About me

Hello, I am Ralph, a certified Psychotherapeutic Counsellor (MNCPS Accred.) My practice primarily revolves around Transactional Analysis Counselling and Psychotherapy, focusing on Relationships, Trauma, and Addiction.

I have expertise in addressing complex personal and interpersonal challenges, including working with a diverse array of relationships: couples, polyamory, inclusive of LGBT, and mixed ethnic communities.

Additionally, I have worked extensively with groups, including significant involvement with First Nations communities in Canada.

In my private practice, Talk to Ralph, I create a secure environment to examine current challenges by uncovering their origins and moving towards your desired outcomes.

I offer a safe, confidential space for working with relationships and individuals over the age of 20, both online and in my practice office in the centre of Brighton.

I offer short and long-term therapy.

Individual sessions are weekly.

Relationship therapy: I recommend 6-8 weeks on a weekly basis and then potentially bi-weekly.

My Philosophy & Approach:

In Transactional Analysis, we adhere to three fundamental principles:

  1. People are OK: This principle underscores my commitment to treating you with dignity, respect and empathy, even during moments when it might be challenging for you to extend this to yourself.
  2. People can Think: our therapeutic journey is a collaborative endeavour, where your thoughts and perspectives are not only acknowledged but also respected within our shared space.
  3. People can Change: I view therapy as a dynamic process of growth and evolution. Despite any feelings of being stagnant or fixed, I believe in your capacity for change and will support you in realising the transformations you seek.

The principle that we are all capable of determining our desires and goals in life is central to my approach. In practical terms, this means that any therapeutic collaboration is built upon a negotiated agreement – a contract. Therapy is conducted in partnership with you, not imposed upon you.

Initial Consultation
I offer short initial phone consultations at a mutually convenient time. This will give you the opportunity to ask me any questions you feel are important before we start working together in person/online.

I will ask you a few questions about what you are looking for and expect from therapy. I will explain a little about how I work and how we can commence our work together.

The First Session
This initial phase is about us establishing a comfortable rapport and gaining clarity on what you expect from me as your therapist and from therapy overall. I will probably inquire more extensively than usual to ensure a thorough grasp of your background, present experience, and objectives. This process is essential for me to engage with you in a safe and ethical manner.

I work in a relational style, meaning that what emerges in our work together, reflecting on relationship histories and patterns, is central to the work.

I conduct therapy with an involved and attentive approach, allowing you the opportunity to share your narrative, delve into exploration, and feel genuinely heard. Moreover, I am transparent, straightforward, and committed to keeping our sessions centred on goals we both agree upon.
