About me

Investing in yourself can sometimes feel hard to do; you can always convince yourself that other things or people are more worthy of that investment but the truth is, making this investment in counselling will be the greatest gift you can give yourself and will change your life.

I am Paul and I am a qualified counsellor who works from a Person Centred Approach. This means I believe you have all the answers yourself and by listening empathetically, without judgement, I support you to find your own answers. I provide a supportive and confidential space where you can share your thoughts and inner-most feelings and work through what may be painful or confusing for you.

Counselling can be accessed for a wide range of reasons; something really specific might have happened to you such as a bereavement or there may be issues in work or at home that you want to talk through. You may be feeling depressed about things that have happened in your past, or anxious about the future, or there may be other feelings and behaviours that are having a negative impact on your life and holding you back. This could be things like; feeling unheard, feeling trapped, having to be “strong” all the time for everyone else, feeling insecure or just disappointed generally with life; together we can explore these feelings, understand where they might stem from, and work together to help move you forward.

Counselling brings awareness to how you feel deep inside and how things that have happened in your past have affected your life and who you are today. By exploring your past, we can find answers to today’s problems and can help release some of the weight and burden of things you may have been carrying, sometimes without even realising.

This is your journey but counselling can help you navigate it – you will be offered a safe and confidential space to say anything you want to out loud without feeling judged or without fear of upsetting anyone. You are at the heart of your sessions; we can discuss anything that you feel is important to you and we will only ever work at your pace.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified Person Centred Counsellor and a registered member of the BACP (the governing body for counsellors). I have worked both for the NHS and privately for a number of years and can offer a range of approaches to suit the needs of my clients. I take my personal development very seriously and regularly attend training and workshops to ensure I am up to date with the latest thinking.

I know when looking for a counsellor, training and qualifications are important but I do strongly believe that the best experience a counsellor can give you is their own life experience. I got into counselling after losing a really close friend to suicide and I've never looked back. At 42, counselling has helped me come to terms with a lot that has happened in my own past, it's made me reassess a lot of my relationships and look at the deep rooted beliefs I had about myself that were holding me back. It has also helped me through recent challenges such as a custody battle over my daughter. Having my own counselling has completely changed my life and I believe has made me a better counsellor; after all, how can I expect you to go to these dark and painful places if I've not been willing to go there myself?

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Additional information

I offer face to face sessions in my home in South Liverpool (parking outside). I also offer online sessions if that's you're preference.

I offer a free, no-obligation consultation call where you can tell me a bit more about why you're looking to start counselling and I can outline my approach and how I can help. It's also an opportunity to ask any questions that you may have and then we  can book you in for your 1st session on a day and time that is suitable.

During the 1st session, we will agree a contract on how we will best work together to get you to where you would like to be.
