About me

Nothing I say here will answer the most important question -

"Can we develop a rapport and work together?"

The best way to find out is to meet up for a chat where you can decide whether working with me will be helpful to you. Do you feel comfortable and safe? Do you experience empathy from me? Do you feel valued? Do you get that mysterious tingle of excitement in your stomach that suggests you may have made the first step towards something new in your life? These are all good signs...

Have a look at my website, check out some of the other therapists listed here, mull it over -
and if you would like to meet up, drop me a line or give me a call.

I offer online therapy via Zoom - a free, secure video platform rather like Skype.

Good luck with your search

Michael

Training, qualifications & experience

I have been a barman, labourer, bookie, actor, waiter, painter and decorator, gardener, acrobat, journalist, stable-hand, juggler, panel fence maker, blacksmith, etc…

Then, 20 years ago, I decided to get a grip and do something useful with my life. Coincidentally, at the same time I realised that my experience of life could be different, I could have some say in it, I could change, I could be happier, more fulfilled, more engaged and alive to the world - and if that was true for me, it was probably true for others and so I began my therapeutic work with people.

I initially trained with the forensic psychology department of HMP Brixton, facilitating CBT based rehabilitation courses in several London prisons. I then followed training opportunities to work with the homeless at St Mungo's, addicts at Addaction and drinkers at Action For Change. After studying for my Counselling Diploma at the Wealden Institute and Bexhill College I secured a job with the NHS working in the mental health team offering a counselling service in GP surgeries in Hastings. In 2017 I was awarded a Diploma in Trauma Therapy by the Wealden Psychological Institute.

In my twenties and thirties I was attached to the West London Buddhist centre and while I no longer refer to myself as a Buddhist I continue to pursue many of the central themes of Buddhism. Two in particular have become very prominent in the world of psychotherapy: Compassion and Mindfulness. Having recently studied under Professor Paul Gilbert who has developed a radical model of psychotherapy called Compassion Focused Therapy, I now include ideas and exercises from this in my practice. I am sure that you have heard about Mindfulness as it is somewhat fashionable at the moment - do not let that put you off, it can be very effective and I am delighted to offer this as part of the work we can do together.

Personally, it is heartwarming and life-affirming that Mindfulness and Compassion which have been an important and often elusive part of my life for thirty years have found their way into my chosen profession.

As part of my role in the NHS I trained with the Metanoia Institute in specialist Counselling for Depression (CfD). I have also enhanced the help I can offer with trauma by qualifying as a therapist in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). For further information on EMDR see:

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
