Martin Firstbrook BA (Hons) PgDP MBACP MCIPD
I am an ex-City professional who has retrained as a psychotherapist and executive coach. I offer a compassionate and research backed approach to counselling and psychotherapy.
I understand that considering counselling or therapy can be a daunting process. It is a process most of us would rather avoid and perhaps you have for a long time. Part of us wants to seek help, but another part of us holds us back, hoping that things will get better on their own. Maybe you are feeling down, depressed or anxious. Perhaps you are having relationship difficulties or find yourself behaving in ways that you want to change. Modern life encourages us to sweep our feelings under the carpet and carry on as we are, but if you have decided that now is the time to change things, I can offer a safe and confidential space for us to explore your challenges and find a new way forward together.
I work from the perspective that there is meaning and purpose underlying your difficulties. For example, our symptoms and life difficulties are often borne out of a part of us that wants to hold onto old patterns of thinking, behaving and relating that helped us to survive and succeed in the past. Our normal human development means that there is a natural tendency to grow beyond these old pattern, becoming more rounded and balanced as we age. However, our old patterns do not give up without a fight. Anxiety, depression and relational difficulties are just some of the consequences of this unconscious inner turmoil. Our job together is to create insight into your old patterns, make some meaning of them, and develop strategies together that will help you to move in a new direction that is aligned with your natural and desired development.
Please contact me via email or phone for a conversation and we can then decide how to proceed. Typically, the next step will be to arrange a time for an initial consultation. During that meeting we will discuss your situation and get to know each other a little before deciding on whether we will work together for a length of time and on what basis.
Common issues I work with include: anxiety, generalised anxiety disorder, relationship issues, depression, panic disorder, feeling sad, anger, bereavement, family issues, affairs and betrayals, loss of meaning and purpose.
