About me

As an Integrative Counsellor and Psychotherapist, I am interested in helping individuals resolve their psychological and emotional problems by tailoring techniques that meet the unique needs of each person. With this in mind, I will often use therapeutic procedures that are drawn from different sources. In practice, this means that there are four main approaches that inform my work: Psychodynamic, Person-Centered, Art Therapy and Cognitive Behavioural approaches.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy focuses on client self-awareness and gaining insight into how the past, particularly relationships, negatively influences present behaviour. In its brief form, a psychodynamic approach helps the client to explore unresolved conflicts that have evolved from past dysfunctional relationships. These conflicts have resulted in symptoms and behaviours creating problems in living.

Person-Centred Therapy focuses upon a person's own inner healing capacity (self-actualisation), supporting the client's journey towards wholeness and mental health by offering empathy and unconditional positive regard. By non-judgmentally allowing clients to freely express their thoughts and feelings, new insights and self understanding can be gained, resulting in clients discovering creative and personalised solutions within themselves.

When using art therapy, an individual will be encouraged to express and explore problems and issues through the medium of art. No previous experience or skill with art is required. As feelings and conflicts are channeled through pictures, sculptures or paintings, they can be expressed and explored in new and novel ways, bringing clarification to problems that previously have not been able to be put into words.

A Cognitive Behavioral intervention will help a person examine how their faulty thoughts and reasoning can negatively affect their feelings and behaviours. This approach can be very helpful with conditions such as Obsessional Compulsive Disorder, Depression and Anxiety.

As a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), I closely follow the organisation's Code of Ethics and Practice making sure that the service I deliver adheres to its principles and guidelines with respect to such issues as client confidentiality, client safety, client autonomy, counsellor competence and record-keeping.

Training, qualifications & experience

Post Graduate Diploma in Art Therapy (1990). Hertfordshire College of Art and Design. I have used art therapy with a broad client group, including children, adults and the elderly, and with a variety of conditions e.g. schizophrenia, personality disorders, autism, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Master of Science in Counselling and Psychotherapy (1995-1999) - University of Central England. This course specialised in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. I have gained many years of experience as a counsellor and psychotherapist, working with children and adults, in both private practice and the public sector (NHS) - dealing with a wide variety of issues and conditions, such as anxiety, depression, PTSD, obsessional compulsive disorders and marital problems.

Florida Jungian Seminar (2007-2008). Florida Association of Jungian Analysts (FAJA). I acquired some basic skills in Dream Interpretation, Active Imagination and Healing through Creativity. Since then I have been able to incorporate these techniques in my work as an integrative therapist.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

HCPC
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
