About me

I believe that one of the best things a person can do – for themselves and others – is to remember that “ you have to start where you are and work with what you have”. Easier said than done, especially when the current situation is exactly what one wants to get away from.

How counselling can help: My perspective

When emotions like fear, anger, stress or anxiety are present, it can be difficult to respond in a way that is in line with one’s values. Counselling is an opportunity to work through emotions and/or ways of thinking in the safety of a supportive relationship that is both professional and compassionate. Working at a pace that is right for you makes it possible to unpack the meaning things hold and to recognise patterns. Understanding ‘what makes you tick’ is a solid starting point for developing alternative ways of responding that reflect your values and long-term interests.

My role in the counselling room is to draw on my experience, skills and understanding to support you in responding to concerns and worries in a way that is right for you. I have worked in a person-centred way since 2016 when I started to see clients as part of my training as a counsellor. Witnessing the uniqueness of the challenges that each person brings to counselling, I have continued to develop my practice towards an integrative approach. In other words, I work in a way that combines models, interventions and insights from different approaches to therapy.

Over the years I have worked with clients in organisational settings dedicated to dealing with the (long-term) impacts of abuse; bereavement /loss; domestic and sexual violence; and psychological trauma.

Although I wholeheartedly believe that accessing counselling is a great way to “start where you are”, I also understand that there are differences in what people want from counselling. For example, one person may struggle with thoughts that they find unbearable, someone else finds it difficult to tolerate (specific) emotions or memories. Others may struggle with changing long-standing habits or have lost faith in their perspective and find decision-making excruciating. Whatever may be the reasons for seeking support, I aim to offer a counselling relationship that feels safe, compassionate and focused on what feels most relevant to you.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
