About me
I am a BACP accredited counsellor and am passionate about mental health, emotional regulation and empowering people to bring about change in order to live a more fulfilling life. It is a natural part of life to find yourself struggling, however there is no need to feel alone. Seeking out a professional who can offer a safe, supportive space to help you find a way to move forward is already a tangible step towards change. I have therapeutic experience in working with a wide variety of issues and can offer a warm atmosphere where I will invite you to explore what’s going on for you and look at how you could bring about change.
Our sessions will explore the parts of your life where you would like more satisfaction and what that might look like. You will have a safe place where you can come to discuss yourself and your life in a way which is meaningful and helpful to you. With life being fast paced for most people today, counselling can provide a place where you can stop the wheel turning for an hour each week and focus on yourself and your own needs. If this sounds like something you could benefit from, please get in touch.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have over 16 years of experience working in a variety of roles within the mental health sector. My specialities include working with severe mental illness, victims and survivors of sexual trauma and abuse, and with children and young people. I regularly work with anxiety, low mood, attachment and relationship difficulties, setting and maintaining boundaries, managing anger, stress, self-esteem and bereavement.
I am always person-centred in my approach to therapy, however, I am trained in integrative counselling and so this allows me to draw on techniques from other disciplines such as CBT, depending on the nature of your issues, and your preference. My work is always underpinned by psychodynamic approaches - our early experiences shape our patterns of behaviour and ways of thinking as adults. However, therapy can give us the tools we need to make changes where we need to - nothing is permanent. Awareness is everything!
I feel that the effectiveness of any therapy is highly reliant on the relationship between the therapist and the client. I really enjoy quality interactions with clients and look forward to developing a meaningful working relationship.
I have years of experience working as a school based counsellor and providing children and young people with counselling sessions to help them navigate issues such as anxiety, exam and school stress, bullying, family conflict, bereavement, friendship issues, trauma, abuse, self-esteem and confidence issues. I use both talking therapy and other creative means depending on what the young person prefers.
My qualifications include a BSc Psychology Honours Degree from Queen’s University Belfast and a level 5 professional qualification from the University of Ulster in integrative counselling.
Member organisations
school Registered / Accredited
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
