About me

My name is Kerry and I offer confidential Counselling and Play Therapy to adults, young people and children from age 6. Counselling is an opportunity to talk about what's on your mind and to gain insight into your thoughts and feelings in a confidential and non-judgmental space. My role is to be an alert and empathic companion on your journey and to help you gain alternative perspectives and insights that can bring clarity and understanding, strength and authenticity to how you perceive yourself and in your interactions with others.

My counselling work is founded on the person-centred principles of unconditional acceptance, congruence and empathy alongside an integrative approach that incorporates Psychodynamic understandings and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) techniques. We may also use symbolic and creative ways to explore thoughts and experiences. However, each client is different and it is this uniqueness that guides the work we do together.

Fundamental to my work is the provision of a compassionate and confidential therapeutic relationship that is unconditionally accepting and non-judgemental. Counselling is not about telling someone what to do; it is about the empowerment of the client irrespective of age or situation and the support of the client in the exploration of their difficulties. I endeavour to work in a way that is appropriate to the maturity and understanding of the client, particularly with young people and children.

With young children, my approach is often more creative and we might use drawing, sand tray, puppets and imaginative play. This can be very helpful for children who struggle to describe their thoughts and feelings.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a Nurse and a Midwife and qualified as a Therapeutic Counsellor at Buckinghamshire College in Amersham in 2018. I then completed a Play Therapy Post-Grad Certificate with Play Therapy UK accredited through Leeds Beckett University and currently coming to the end of a Specialist Diploma in Counselling Children and Young People. I have experience counselling children in both junior and senior school and currently work, alongside my private practice, as a school counsellor at a senior school in Oxfordshire.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
