About me
I have worked one to one with adult individuals since 1990 initially in the educational sector and worked at The University of Chichester from 1999 until 2008. Since relocating to Herefordshire, I worked as a counsellor for Gloucestershire Counselling Service, and also at The University of Gloucestershire. I now concentrate on my work in private practice.
I have experience of working with individual clients for a vast range of issues, and have worked with couples where they need to jointly explore aspects of their relationship. I aim to treat every client with respect and as a unique individual. Counselling is a collaborative process and the relationship between counsellor and client, and how we work together, is the key to change.
Working with Individual Adults and Couples
My initial psychodynamic counselling training was in working with individual adults. I have also undertaken considerable postgraduate training in counselling couples in order to understand better the significant difference in working with couples, all types of relationships, including friends, siblings, work partnerships, as well as in marriage and civil partnerships.
It is imperative for all counsellors to keep learning through engaging in a broad and deep programme of CPD (Continuing Professional Development). As a counsellor that likes learning I regularly seek and take part in CPD courses.
Compass Point Counselling
Originally from Sussex, I now offer counselling in private practice at Compass Point Counselling both online and from our welcoming, confidential and dedicated consulting room in the heart of Ross on Wye. I can also offer Zoom / Skype / FaceTime online counselling, and have received specific training in working in online psychodynamic counselling and therapy.
On our first appointment we can discuss and explore together the issues that have brought you to counselling, what you hope for, and we can decide together on how we might best work together.

Training, qualifications & experience
I have been working one to one with individuals since 1990, and bring that history of experience into my counselling work. I trained for 5 years in psychodynamic counselling, was initially accredited by the Westminster Pastoral Foundation (WPF) and subsequently by the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC).
In addition to my initial training in open-ended psychodynamic counselling, I have trained in psychodynamic time-limited therapy, and worked for a period at The University of Gloucestershire working with students for time-limited counselling. I have also worked with clients referred for time-limited counselling and funded by their employer. I currently provide both open-ended and time-limited counselling for individual adults and couples.

Member organisations
Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.
The British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) is a professional association, representing the profession of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.
The organisation is itself made up of fourteen member organisations and BPC accredits the trainings of its member organisations. An individual who qualifies from one of these trainings is then eligible for entry into the BPC's register.
BPC registrants are governed by a code of ethics, a policy of continuing professional development, a statement on confidentiality and a complaints procedure. The BPC is a Member Society of the European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the Public Sector (EFPP). Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

I retain a limited portion of my practice for clients on a low income and am therefore sometimes, depending on your financial situation, able to offer a reduced fee. This would be discussed at the initial consultation.
Individual Counselling
The fee for registration and an initial 50 minute consultation is £60
Individual Counselling is £60 for 50 minutes as standard for weekly counselling. Please talk to me to see if there are any reduced fee appointments available.
Couples and Relationship Counselling
The fee for registration and the first four 50 minute consultations is £400
Couples Counselling is £100 for 50 minutes as standard.
Accessibility
My consulting room is on the ground floor with one small external step. The doorways both have completely flat and level thresholds.
If mobility is an issue it might be worth considering appointments online via video call. I usually work on Zoom, but I can offer Skype or FaceTime calls if required.

Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire is well situated on the M50 for access from both South Wales and the Midlands, and is situated on the edge of the beautiful Forest of Dean. My consulting room is within a commutable distance from Newent, Monmouth, Ledbury, Hereford, Tewkesbury, Gloucester, Cheltenham, and Malvern, with Worcester, Chepstow, Newport, Cardiff, Birmingham and Bristol a little further away.
My consulting room is easy to find, but private, with ample parking nearby, both free on-street (look for the 2-hour spaces) and the public car park at Sainsbury’s is close by. Parking immediately outside is free from 6pm, but limited to only 30 minutes during the day. It is in the town centre, which has many independent shops, cafes and coffee shops nearby.
