About me

My name is Katie Newton and I am an Integrative Psychotherapist / Counsellor offering sessions near Eastwood, Nottinghamshire.  I am currently offering face to face sessions in my office, via online platform (Zoom) or on the telephone. I am also a Level 7 trainee Clinical Supervisor.

I am committed to providing counselling and psychotherapy in a safe, confidential and non-judgmental environment.

There is plenty of space for parking outside, either on the road or driveway.

We will work together at a pace that feels comfortable for you, to explore your feelings, thoughts, behaviours and patterns, whilst trying to understand how these might have developed. This can be a daunting process, but with the support of your therapist, you will be given time and space to explore and reflect on these experiences and relate them to your current way of being in the world.

I draw from a range of counselling and psychotherapy approaches to provide the right support for you. I am able to provide both short term counselling, where you may have a specific problem which you wish to look at or longer-term psychotherapy, where deeper more complex issues can be explored. Both short and long-term work will have the aim of enabling you to enhance your life and to live it more fully.

My experience involves working with a range of different issues such as anxiety, depression, bereavement and loss, sexual and physical abuse, childhood issues, trauma, relationship difficulties, affair and betrayals, divorce and separation. I also work with a whole range of issues including:

  • Stress
  • Relationships
  • Panic Attacks
  • Redundancy
  • Addiction
  • Abuse
  • Divorce
  • Eating issues
  • Family problems
  • Isolation and loneliness
  • Gambling addiction
  • Chronic illness
  • Low self-esteem
  • Lack of self-confidence
  • Major life changes
  • Mental health issues.

This list is not exhaustive, and there are many other reasons why people choose to have therapy.

I am able to offer a free telephone call prior to arranging an assessment appointment if that would suit you, where we can discuss what your difficulties or issues are and what you are hoping for from counselling / psychotherapy.

If I am unable to answer your call, it may be because I am working, but please leave a message or send a text and I will return your call as soon as possible.

Please contact me by email if you feel more comfortable with this.

I won’t tell you how many sessions I think you need - this is something that we will discuss together, and the decision will always rest with you. I will build regular reviews into our work to make sure that you feel ok with how the therapy is going.  We will also look at how we will work towards an ending and what that might look like for you.  A positive ending to therapy can have huge relational rewards and is an important part of the process.

Training, qualifications & experience

Training

I am a fully qualified and accredited psychotherapist, with a Masters degree in MSc Integrative Psychotherapy from the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute in Nottingham.  I also have a Diploma in Couples Therapy.

I am also a Level 7 trainee Clinical Supervisor.

I am a Full Clinical member of the UKCP (UK Council for Psychotherapy).

I have a BA (Hons) Human Sciences from Nottingham Trent University (1998).

Experience

I have worked in a number of organisations, offering face to face counselling to both adults and young people. I have worked with clients for short term periods (6 weeks) and also with long term work, for those who feel they need that level of support. I have worked with a number of clients dealing with a variety of issues in their lives, who need space and time to explore them in therapy. I have worked at Cruse Bereavement Care, Doncaster College, The Haven Counselling Service and SHE-UK (supporting adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse.)

I undertake personal therapy and clinical supervision with registered UKCP psychotherapists. This is part of my parallel clinical obligations with UCKP to ensure that I am providing an ethical and effective service to clients.

I previously worked in the public sector for 18 years, and due to the nature of this role, I have particular expertise in working with trauma, bereavement and loss, childhood abuse, sexual and domestic violence.

I have full Professional Indemnity Insurance and have an Enhanced DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service, previously Criminal Records Bureau).

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

UKCP
UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP)

The UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) is a leading professional body for the education, training and regulation of psychotherapists and psychotherapeutic counsellors. Its register is accredited by the government's Professional Standards Authority.

As part of its commitment to protect the public, it works to improve access to psychotherapy, to support and disseminate research, to improve standards and to respond effectively to complaints against its members.

UKCP standards cover the range of different psychotherapies. Registration is obtained by training or accrediting with one of its member organisations, or by holding a European Certificate in Psychotherapy. Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

UK Council for Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
