About me

I work with your needs and can adapt my approach according to your preferences. I can help you find better balance, live authentically, make sense of your relationships, deal with stresses and identify and overcome unhelpful thoughts, feelings and behaviours.

Research tells us that the relationship between therapist and client is central to client outcomes. It’s two way. I offer a safe trusting environment to enable you to bring all of your thoughts and feelings into sessions.

To get the best from the sessions I recommend you try to keep the focus on your own feelings and experiences and be curious about them and about how you came to be the way you are. When you focus within, you’ll find a lot of resources. This can help you find meaning, know what you need and be more empowered to make and changes you want to make.

We’ve all adopted strategies for getting along in life. What are yours and what do they do for you? Some people, for instance, realise that they are over accommodating because that’s the only way they felt accepted by others when they were young and their opinions were not valued. Or they are attracted to people now who are emotionally unavailable or they learnt to comfort themselves with food because they had a parent who was preoccupied with work or alcohol or caring for someone else.

Therapy can help connect the dots between events and understand how your personality and your responses affect your well-being. A deeper understanding of how you operate (and why) in different circumstances will serve you as you apply what you’ve learned in therapy.

This can take the form of specific things you want or need to take on, change or accept. Or it might take the form of more general intentions about how you want to behave going forward, such as an intention to not avoid situations that make you anxious or only have relationships with people who can be there for you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I trained as a counsellor through the Counselling and Psychotherapy Central Awarding Body (CPCAB) over 4 years and have a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. For those who are interested in the type or ‘modality’ of therapy I offer - I take an integrative humanistic approach.

I do regular CPD which includes short courses in psychodynamic, person centred and somatic/body psychotherapy approaches.

I have extensive knowledge and personal experience of a number of ‘12 Step’ recovery programmers including Alcoholics Anonymous, Eating Disorders /Overeaters Anonymous, Adult Children of Alcoholics and Dysfunctional Families and Al Anon.

As well as training as a counsellor I have had a long career working for Government in environmental protection and childrens policy and I continue to do this as well as doing agency counselling work.

I also have a regular zen meditation practice and I am a keen recreational runner as I find getting outdoors and into my body/the present moment supports my own balance and wellbeing. I am a keen advocate of using these tools to aid personal and spiritual growth.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Additional information

I am happy to provide a free initial 30 minute informal consultation. This initial consultation can be over the phone, online or in person. We can discuss what you are looking for from counselling. You can get a feel for whether I am someone you would like to see for further sessions. If I don’t feel I am the best person to meet your needs (for example it seems that another form of therapy may be more appropriate) we can discuss that.

I usually offer an initial block of between six and twelve sessions to be reviewed as necessary. I also offer longer term work. A session is approximately 50 minutes whether face to face or online. If it is online you need to be somewhere you feel comfortable and will not be overheard or interrupted so you can concentrate on the session and getting the most from it.

Sessions are confidential and I abide by the BACP code of ethics.

I operate a sliding scale please ask and I also work with employee insurance schemes and provide sessional work for third sector organisations.
