About me

I don't have particular clients that I wish to hear from. I enjoy the variety of helping people from a range of backgrounds and ages, who are facing an array of challenges. Each person is unique and they deserve a chance to be set free from their burdens. I'd consider it a pleasure to walk alongside you and help you in your journey towards finding a peaceful mind.

I see counselling as walking in the woods alongside my client. You choose the paths we tread and I remain by your side no matter what choices you make. I'll get you to pause and look around - perhaps pointing out things that you haven't noticed, highlighting the things you have, or enabling and encouraging you down the path you want to take. I'll be able to spot some things that are holding you back. If something is pulling you down I can reach out and help you up or, if you're not ready, then I'll just sit down in the muck with you until we're ready to get back up together.

If you're struggling, I think I can help you. I believe in the healing power of counselling. I believe in my ability to provide a strong support and deep empathy for any client whose problems are within my remit too. I believe also in my clients: you have everything you need already there to have a full, happy life and I can help to guide you there. Please feel free to send me a message or an email and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a diploma in integrative counselling. This means I use a range of approaches when counselling. These include:

  • Person centred- a very gentle, natural counselling style, focusing purely on what you want to talk about.
  • Psychodynamic-looking back in your life to understand events and situations that have shaped how you negotiate the world around you today.
  • C.B.T- cognitive behavioural therapy addresses your thinking and behaviour. In order to change how you feel emotionally and how you feel physically, we can change thinking and behaviour.

Out of the three styles mentioned above, Person-centred is very much my favourite. It's very non invasive and I believe it quickly allows the client to relax and gives them the confidence to start finding their way. I will however switch seamlessly between these depending on the person and the situation.

I've also a degree in Education and worked in schools for a substantial period of time before I became a counsellor. Experience in teaching may not be apparently useful for counselling, but it certainly allows me to identify with anyone who is facing challenges in a highly pressured, stressful work environment.

My counselling space is comfortable, safe and bright.  It's also very private: there is no risk of you bumping into anyone you know at my workplace, your safe place.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

If you get in touch with me I will initiate an initial telephone conversation to arrange our first in-person session and discuss your availability and mine for that. You will be very welcome to ask anything you'd like to know about on the initial phone call too.

In our first in person session we'll go over our contract and I'll find out more about you- just to get a general background picture of your life. We'll then talk a little more about what's happening in your life now and we'll set some goals together and we'll get to unpack some of your story. For most clients, I would expect perhaps 6 sessions should see a marked improvement in many aspects of your life. Clients normally report a marked difference within 3-4 sessions with me.

If you don't choose to work with me, do work with a counsellor who seems to "get" you. If the dynamics don't feel right in your relationship, then it's probably not the right relationship to really help you. Look for someone who encourages you to talk about difficult feelings: it's in this that you will find healing. You are of great worth and you deserve to work with a counsellor who not only treats you as having great worth but who seeks to instil that sense of great self-worth within you.

I'll finish by sharing with you a few of the reviews written by some of my clients who I have helped:

"Jonny is extremely professional whilst being empathetic and supportive. I met with Jonny on a fortnightly basis for help with anxiety and depression. He validated all my feelings and emotions and taught me many different strategies to deal with these. Through working with Jonny my life has become so much better. I am now able to find joy and happiness every day and know that when life gets tough from time to time I will be able to cope."

"I had suffered from depression, childhood trauma, anxiety and very low self-esteem for many years. I had tried counselling before and thought it wasn't for me but finding the right counsellor made all the difference. When I first met Jonny, I told him I was unfixable but how wrong I was!! Jonny is so easy to talk to, empathetic, non judgemental and so understanding. He provided me with invaluable support and tools to help me untangle my uncertainties, injustices and anxiety. I couldn't recommend Jonny enough for those searching for expert guidance and support."

"I started going to Jonny at a very difficult point in my life... my life felt like it had fallen apart. I didn't realise how broken I was until I started looking deeper at my issues. Jonny gave me the strength to get through it, supporting me every week with ways to cope and to be honest was not only my counsellor but a friend. I felt so comfortable with him which made me feel able to open up... I could not have got through things without him and am eternally grateful."

"Jonny helped to identify my issues with self-image and always challenged self-destructive behaviour. I was able to talk bluntly and honestly without judgement. I was able to share things I thought I'd never be able to voice, which led to Jonny helping me create steps I needed to take in order to have difficult conversations in my own time. This really helped my relationship with my family and friends...

Before counselling, I hated spending time alone, but now I actively seek out alone time as I am no longer afraid of my own mind. He allowed me to grieve things I didn't know I was allowed to grieve and for this, I am incredibly grateful that I was able to access such high-quality counselling.

After 8 months I was able to say that I no longer needed counselling, a day I thought would never come. I am very thankful for my time with Jonny and will highly recommend him to anyone who feels they will never be able to escape their spiralling mind."

Please text, email, WhatsApp or call with any questions and I'll be sure to get back to you as soon as I'm available.
