About me

Hi, I’m John and I am a registered MBACP (Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) based in sunny Torbay. Following many life-altering and profound changes within my own life, I decided to follow my true passion of psychology, philosophy, spirituality, and science. I devoted my time to three years of professional training and now I am ready to help you.

Counselling is something that everyone should try simply because of the personal benefits that you gain from the process. For example counselling can help with; recovering your motivation, perspective, or joy that you once had. Therapy can also help and support you through a difficult period in your life like divorce, illness etc. Perhaps you are constantly over-thinking, or being critical of yourself, or reliving past events. Maybe you have low self-esteem, are unable to say 'no' to people, have no self-worth, or are overly concerned with what others may say or think of you.

Sometimes life can change so drastically that we even lose sight of who we are. Our identity, our moral compass, our safety or place in the world can all disappear leaving us feeling lost, alone, or isolated, so then what? How do we find our way back? Do we even want to go back?

All of these topics (and more) I truly understand and can help you with. Working together, Critical Echo Counselling can give you back your voice, your power, and your perspective by helping you understand your emotional and psychological process.

"We are all perfect, but sometimes we just buy into other people's stories and become lost." JH

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I use many supportive ways of working to help you get the most out of your counselling journey. These include, Person-Centred, Psychoanalytic, Psychodynamic, Humanistic, Relational, CBT, Gestalt, Spirituality and more. Which ever road we travel, it's important to remember that no one knows your life like you, so you are always in the drivers seat.

I also understand that you are a human being and that sometimes we can find it hard to share things with others because we fear their judgement, therefore my private and confidential counselling space is the perfect place to explore whatever challenge you are facing safely. I follow GDPR and BACP guidelines keeping your details safe & secure giving you the privacy & respect you deserve.

Opening up to someone new can understandably make you feel anxious. However, just know that I am very relatable, and I will help you explore your thoughts and emotions in a friendly, non-judgemental & empathetic way.

Therapy doesn't have to be scary, believe it or not, clients really look forward to coming back. Look forward to meeting you soon.

If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.
