About me

There are many times in life when we are faced with challenges, or simply feel stuck. This may feel too overwhelming to cope with on our own, even with the support of loved ones. Therapy can be a place of support, exploration and sometimes change.

Being heard

I provide a calm, non-judgemental and confidential space where together we can talk about what’s going on for you. Together, we’ll find the best ways to support you and give you the means to take good care of yourself. Often simply being able to express difficult feelings or tell your story to a professional is a vital first step.

Sometimes, we don’t realise what it’s like to be truly listened to and heard until we experience it.

Exploring

On this foundation, I bring my professional experience and training, which enable me to work with you to begin to explore your experience of life. This is an opportunity to go beyond ‘just living’ (or perhaps even ‘just surviving’); it is an opportunity to slow down repeated patterns of thinking about your life, to genuinely experience your feelings, and to reflect on the present in the light of the past. Working in this way can offer more than just a different perspective, it can also bring about a deeper understanding of your life.

Understanding

I believe that real and lasting change requires understanding ourselves and our histories. This process could be seen in many ways: bringing the unconscious to conscious light; understanding the initial causes of unhelpful behaviours; acknowledging the impact of the world we live in.

Acceptance and Change

Many people come to therapy with a sense that something in their life needs to change. For some, the journey from ‘understanding’ to ‘changing’ can be challenging, but possible. For others, the changes that we want are unattainable or overwhelming - perhaps a relationship that’s come to an end or the resolution of big societal challenges — and so the focus may be on finding ways to live creatively within these limitations that still allow a full life. Accepting ourselves for who we are - perhaps letting go of a requirement to change for others – can be just as powerful. Therapy does not promise change, but it can offer hope. Moreover, it offers a space where we can take a break from the demands of our regular lives, to slow things down and begin to make some sense of our feelings.

My approach

I chose this career because I was trying to find a sense of purpose, in a way that wasn’t being satisfied elsewhere in my life. Making meaning out of life feels important to me as it is to everyone. I see therapy as a path to knowing ourselves better and enjoying a more fulfilling life.

Integrative therapy incorporates a wide range of psychotherapeutic theories and techniques. By being non-prescriptive, it takes into account individual differences and circumstances.

My approach looks at how our past can inform and shape our experience of the present. Therapy with me may also explore areas such as how feeling is experienced in the body, on issues around identity and our place in the world, and on more existential themes around life, loss, crisis and death. For those who are more interested in the specifics of my approach, we can of course discuss it further in session; in short, I work relationally, incorporating both psychodynamic and humanistic thinking.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a diploma in Integrative Counselling from The Minster Centre, one of Europe’s oldest and leading integrative training institutions. I am a registered member of the British Council for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and abide by their code of ethics. I am also fully insured. I have worked with individuals on both short-term, long-term and open-ended basis. I have also worked at private and not-for-profit therapy services.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
