About me

With so many options of different counsellors with different skills, specialities, interests and all the jargon to work through - it must feel like a complete minefield trying to find the right counsellor for you. Where do you start? And how will you know if you've found the right person?

My name is Emma. I'm 35, and I'm an integrative counsellor (that means I use a range of different ways of working, to find what works for you). I know I'm young and I know that often potential clients wonder "what does she know?" - the truth is, I've been through a lot in my life, had a lot of counselling myself, and it massively informs my practice. I know what it's like to feel overwhelmed, to feel lost, to feel like a burden to others, and to believe that there's something wrong with you.

My role is to help you to see that these (often very loud and convincing) narratives, are not the entire picture of you. You are so much more than the difficulties you are facing, but it's hard to recognise that when you're 'in it'.

I know how utterly terrifying it can be to talk about things you don't even like to think about, or have pushed away. I also know what it feels like when you find the right counsellor, and you have a safe space where you can be brave enough to tentatively explore parts of yourself, your life and how you see the world.

It's a huge privilege that I might be the person that you trust to share things with, which is why I focus so much on you feeling safe to explore who you are - often by me being as 'me' as I can be, with you.

I'm not a counsellor who will just sit session after session and listen, nodding my head and 'hmmm' ing. I'm here to change lives. It sounds big and impressive, but I firmly believe that counselling has that power, in fact, I know it does, because I've done it myself, and I've seen it with my clients.

And to cover the professional aspect for a moment - my foundational training is in person-centred counselling at one of the best colleges in the south west (although I am biased on that one), I am passionate about continued professional development, and am currently undertaking both a Level 5 Diploma in Psychotherapeutic Counselling and an additional transpersonal women's course. I have additional training in counselling children and young people, trauma, shame, safeguarding and mental health awareness. Alongside that I have a first class degree in Psychology, a degree and post-grad in Religious Studies and I read, attend conferences and training, watch TED talks and listen to podcasts extensively to continue to develop my knowledge. I am LGBTQIA+ and neurodiverse friendly, influenced not only by psychology and counselling knowledge and theories, but by nature, spirituality and religion, financial wellness, physical wellness and always work with the diversity and complexity of human experience in mind.

My sessions are 50 minutes and are either face to face in Langport or online. My rate is a fixed fee of £55 per session, although I do offer a limited number of concessionary slots for trainee counsellors.

And finally, because finding a counsellor can be a massive risk - I offer a free twenty minute chat either on the phone or ideally online (so we can see each other). To sound sale-sy for a second - there's no obligation. We can chat and you can immediately contact someone else if I'm not the counsellor for you, as it's so important that you find someone that's the right fit for this often vulnerable process.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
