About me

My name is Emma Baines-Dinning, and I am a qualified person-centred counsellor. I completed a COSCA DipHE in Person-Centred Counselling and Psychotherapy at UHI Moray in 2023, and now I work in private practice with adults on a one to one basis.

What does Person-Centred mean?

Person-Centred is my counselling approach, and it means that in your sessions, I am led by you and will work with you as we explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences. I will remain curious and unintrusive as we go about this, giving you the time and space to reconnect with yourself, and share your unique story in your own time and in your own way.

My focus is not on offering you advice or telling you what you should do, especially as I do not know more about you than you know about yourself. Instead, my focus is on connecting to your experience, and understanding things as you understand them.

I will establish a foundation of safety and trust with you, so that you feel able to speak freely, and feel that you are being valued, respected and understood.

How can counselling help?

It is my belief that when we experience being consistently valued and compassionately held, that this allows us to explore what is going on for us more deeply, and it is through this process, that we may meet aspects of ourselves which we have been denying for a long time.

Asking for help is a brave and courageous move towards supporting your emotional health and personal growth. It is a first and positive step towards the changes you're seeking. I understand that expressing your innermost thoughts and feelings can feel like a vulnerable and daunting thing to do, but I will be there to guide you towards getting to know yourself better and building self-trust.

Talking through what you are experiencing can help you to grow in self-awareness, build resilience, and foster compassion and acceptance for yourself.

Through my approach, I aim to empower you to realise your potential and discover the agency you have over your own life.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

I am able to work with a wide range of issues within my counselling practice, but particular areas of interest that I am expanding my learning and understanding of are trauma, shame, inner critic work, and family estrangement.

If I do not think I am the right therapist for you based on working within the limits of my competence, I will be upfront and honest about this and my focus will then become about getting you the support you need.
