About me
Dear potential client,
If you are here, you are considering whether I might be the right person for you to work with - what might you want to know about me?
Perhaps the way I am trained, perhaps my qualifications, perhaps where I am based – but I suspect more importantly, you have to get a sense of whether you can trust me, rely on me and really get on with me – only then will you allow me the privilege of really getting to know you.
For some of you, learning to trust can already feel like a real challenge. Being seen may be difficult and painful. Especially if you haven’t experienced this in the past or if you have been let down before. If relationships have been uncertain, unpredictable, unsafe. Or if they have left you questioning yourself and your worth. I understand that, and I will work with you gently and relationally – using what happens in the room as a mirror to your world outside the room and to help you understand those relational patterns and try to move forward.
I work using different modes of therapy – integrating different approaches and responding to what feels right for you. I am naturally more inclined to work using the past – and thinking about how this might have informed your present. Looking at what we might be holding unconsciously that can keep us stuck in repetitive patterns of behaviour and outdated self-beliefs.
I am trauma informed and work using psychoeducation to help you understand your experiences - not only by using talking therapy to make the unconscious conscious but also by looking at how our experiences might have shaped us biologically. This is especially important if you have a trauma related diagnosis but also if your emotions feel out of control and difficult to regulate. Clients have found this approach helpful, and normalising of their experiences.
As for me, I have enjoyed working with a variety of clients from different walks of life. I have worked in prisons and in private practice. I work gently while holding you safely. I am serious without taking myself too seriously. I am not easily shocked, I am open minded and grounded but with plenty of energy. I won’t say too much about myself as the focus is always on the client but you might want a sense of who I am other than being a counsellor – I really enjoy my food, being in nature and have a love of music. I look forward to learning about and getting to know you.
Training, qualifications & experience
I have worked with clients experiencing anxiety, depression, relationship/attachment and family challenges, complex post-traumatic stress disorder, PTSD, dissociative disorders, addictions, self harm, and struggles with emotional management and low self esteem.
I have training and experience of working with personality disorder.
I manage a counselling project for a local charity and continue to work with clients who struggle with their relationships, their sense of self, and survivors of traumatic and abusive experiences. The work of the charity focuses on women coping with child loss and separation (including miscarriage and abortion).
Prior to becoming a psychotherapist, I have worked in the criminal justice sector which gave me a wealth of experience in responding to everyday life challenges, as well as more serious trauma. I spent many years delivering therapeutic groupwork before becoming a counsellor in prison.
If you think that I may be someone you would like to explore working with, please get in touch in total confidentiality. I look forward to hearing from you.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
