About me

I am a qualified, BACP-registered integrative counsellor with a career background in law. I am based in the Balham area of south west London and offer in-person and online individual counselling sessions to adults. As a multicultural counsellor, I welcome clients with diverse backgrounds and identities, and have experience working with a range of mental health difficulties including depression, anxiety, stress and trauma.

My approach

People come to counselling for a variety of reasons, so I will be guided by your individual circumstances and needs. I aim to create a calm, reliable and non-judgemental environment where we can talk in depth about the difficulties that brought you to counselling. I use a non-directive style to facilitate your self-exploration, with the aim of helping you get in touch with thoughts and feelings that might ordinarily be outside of your conscious awareness. I might offer an insight, an interpretation or an alternative point of view, to help you make links or see things from a different perspective.

Practicalities

I offer counselling on an open-ended basis or on a time-limited basis, depending on your therapeutic goals and preferred structure. Open-ended counselling continues for as long as you need it whereas time-limited counselling continues for an agreed number of sessions (usually between six and 20 sessions).

A counselling session is 50 minutes long and takes place on a set day and time every week, apart from agreed holiday breaks.

I offer once-weekly or twice-weekly counselling.

Training, qualifications & experience

Training

My training and approach is integrative, meaning that I draw upon several core therapeutic modalities. In particular, I am influenced by psychodynamic, person-centred and phenomenological approaches to therapy.

Qualifications

I hold a Diploma in Integrative Counselling from the Minster Centre and am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP). Currently I am in the final stages of completing an Advanced Diploma and MA in Integrative Psychotherapy and Counselling at the Minster Centre, with a view to gaining a further qualification as a psychotherapist.

Experience

In addition to working in private practice, I volunteer as a counsellor at One in Four – a specialist charity that supports adult survivors of child sexual abuse and trauma. Previously I worked for three years at a generalist counselling service in south west London and volunteered for four years at a residential respite centre for people who are at risk of suicide.

Prior to my career in mental health, I worked for 10 years in the corporate sector as a solicitor, specialising in dispute resolution and corporate social responsibility. I also hold a master’s degree in law.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
