About me

Welcome!  I offer face to face, Zoom/ phone sessions and walking therapy.

I know that talking about feelings can seem scary, especially if life seems overwhelming or really stuck right now - and yet I believe human connection is essential in difficult times (and these have been more difficult times than usual, haven't they!).  Sometimes we just need someone to listen to us.

The word therapy literally means ‘to stand beside the other’ and together, in a safe and non-judgemental space, we can work with whatever's challenging or overwhelming you, and explore new choices - at your own pace.  If you’re feeling lost, scared or distressed, I'd like to support you to find some clarity, offering you warmth and integrity whilst we do that.  I work with issues from fear, loss and grief; family, parenting and relationship issues, fertility and pregnancy issues, work problems, anger, general stress or ‘stuckness’; addictive behaviour, anxiety, panic and depression and trauma.

We all get into behavioural habits/ rigid patterns to protect ourselves, usually without realising, and I work with helping you identify these; freeing them up to make life easier.  I'm also very interested in how we hold emotions and anxiety in our bodies - and how to locate what causes tension and distress, making it easier to bear.  Crucially, I believe we all deserve the chance to express ourselves without feeling judged, and the chance to find our own light. During therapy, I'm led by your needs. If you want to simply talk, or are interested in using creativity to gain new perspectives, such as journal writing or free drawing, we can do that together, exploring how to move into new cycles of experience. I draw on different therapeutic models: being particularly interested in what's happening for you right now in the present moment, as well as looking at the past, and any fears for the future.

Training, qualifications & experience

My belief in the vitality of connection with others led me to become a Samaritan at the age of twenty, some decades ago! Working in drama, the arts and media enabled me to experience and research countless walks of life, whether it was Relate's Sex therapy, stress at work or young people who persistently ran away. This background, along with writing and university teaching (working with students), led to my counselling training: at the renowned Gestalt Centre in London and at the Psychosynthesis Trust.

As an experienced humanistic practitioner, I believe that mind, body and emotions are linked and that good therapy can help in most areas of life. I've worked in community counselling for some years, with clients of all backgrounds & age groups, from teens upwards. I continue to train in different areas, from bereavement to trauma, attachment therapy and disorders, shame and envy.

I’m BACP registered, and always work within the ethical framework.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

I offer a 15 min free initial phone chat if you want to discuss what you're looking for before a 1st session.

Generally, counselling works best on a weekly basis. I’d suggest an initial meeting to help identify the key issues you wish to address, how I think I can help, and for us to decide whether and how we will work together.
