About me

It is understandable if you are feeling nervous. Starting therapy can be a mix of emotions –stressful, nervous, overwhelming or maybe exciting.  You might be experiencing doubt as it is hard to know which therapist to choose or you don’t know if it will help. If you are reading this, I know that you have already taken the brave step of admitting to yourself that you want some support or for something to be different.

This is where I can help. I will meet you wherever you are at and explore what is important to you. That might be getting stuff off your chest and feeling heard, or it might be expressing some difficult emotions. It may be exploring difficulties from the past, understanding something more recent, or exploring your hopes for the future.

I imagine that you may be experiencing some difficult emotions which may have led you to look for a counsellor. You may be feeling anxious and overwhelmed. You may be aware that you are getting frustrated and irritated with others. You may be feeling low, numb or disconnected. You may be feeling alone, unheard or that no one understands you. That’s OK, you are experiencing being human.  It’s hard sometimes, isn’t it?

So, what do I do? I describe myself as an integrative relational counsellor and psychotherapist.  This means I believe that our past relationships influence how we think and feel today. This can influence how we see ourselves and how we are in the world.  I work by listening to you and your experiences.  I will try to understand how this is for you.  I pay attention to our relationship and notice what is happening between us as I hear you speak. By noticing how we interact with each other, this may offer us awareness on how you may interact “out there” in your own life.  This awareness may help us to work collaboratively to create meaning and understanding, or it may help us discover what could be different to improve your wellbeing.

Who am I? As our relationship is important in relational psychotherapy, you may want to know more about me.  I started my career as a nurse, I have worked in behaviour change and trained as a coach.  As a therapist I combine my knowledge about the body and a variety of psychological theories and interventions to best meet your needs. This may involve exploring the mind-body connection in our sessions.

To find out more, email me to arrange a free 30-minute online or telephone introductory session. Please check your spam folder for my reply.

My fee for a subsequent counselling session is £62 for a 60-minute session.

I have over 5 years experience working as a counsellor and psychotherapist.  This has included in a mental health charity, at York Clinic for Integrated Healthcare, and in private practice.  I have experience of working with a wide range of issues such as relationship and family difficulties, anxiety, low mood, low self-confidence and low self-esteem, bereavement and loss,  difficulties with emotions, trauma, and being a carer.

I have over twenty years’ experience as a nurse working in NHS and local authority organisations with a focus on healthy lifestyles. I am also a qualified coach.

What does this range of experience mean to you?

My nursing experience means you can talk to me about health issues without feeling that you need to explain the condition or the medical process. I have experience of working with chronic conditions in a hospital and community setting. I also have public health experience that focuses on prevention and better management of health. I have experience working in sexual health, maternal health, and healthy living.

As a counsellor, we can work together to explore your experience in a person-centred way that helps you to feel understood and more aware of how you think, feel and act.

As a coach, I have experience working with workplace difficulties, career development and better managing health.  As a counsellor my focus is to help you to be present with your experiences.  Over time I could bring a solution focused coaching approach, if needed, to explore what you want and what steps you can take to achieve it.

I am committed to offering a service which is welcoming to all backgrounds in a supportive and non-discriminatory manner.
