About me

Hello, my name is Barbara, I am a fully qualified Person-Centred Counsellor and a qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist. I work within an organisation, as well as working within my own private practice, alongside one other qualified counsellors. I offer counselling for individuals aged 18+. I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and adhere to their ethical framework.

You and your counsellor

The relationship between you and your counsellor is one of the most significant factors in the effectiveness of your counselling sessions. The aim is to build a relationship based on trust with your counsellor, and feel able to confide in them your feelings and emotions. As a qualified counsellor, I am trained to listen with empathy and openness to all you have to share, and I have professional experience supporting clients with the problems that they may be facing. I am not there to judge you or force you to take a particular course of action. Instead, a counsellors role is to help you develop a better understanding of yourself and of others so that you can make positive choices for yourself.

Starting Counselling

It is not uncommon to feel uncertain or hesitant about seeking help. In the initial session, there is an opportunity for us to meet each other and explore whether counselling could be helpful to you. There is no obligation to ongoing work at this point.

If you decide you would like to continue, we would agree together regular days and times to meet on an ongoing basis. The setting up of regular sessions is important in order to facilitate, and give momentum to, the therapeutic process. Most people find that regular contact provides a sense of security and continuity whilst they are working on their emotional difficulties.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
