About me
I am a Afro-Caribbean therapist and my therapeutic approach is eclectic and integrative, drawing inspiration from various theoretical frameworks, predominantly person centred, psychodynamic, Gestalt, and cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT). Bereavement, grief, and loss in diverse spheres of life, including identity, loved ones, health, and relationships, are my areas of expertise.
Training, qualifications & experience
I am a BACP Advanced Humanistic Integrative Psychotherapist and Counsellor.
I work intuitively, within a transpersonal approach that meets clients at their place of need. My approach which includes person centred, psychodynamic and Gestalt approach is formed and sharpen through my experience of volunteering and working as a qualified British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) counsellor, as well as my life experiences.
My previous experiences includes developing and co-facilitated an African-Caribbean women's therapeutic group. This has given me the ability to think creatively while also demonstrating receptive and adaptive thinking, as well as being aware of the needs of individuals within the group and how to keep the group focused. I also collaborated with organisations such as the Gay Men Interaction Partnership, Southwark Bereavement Care, and Newham Action Against Domestic Violence. Jointly I have worked with young people in a religious setting to support with mental health and also volunteering as a chaplin within a Hospital.
My registration currently includes both adult and young people.
My working methods are mostly psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and Gestalt. In theory, I believe that a person's past has a significant impact on their present. However, there are situations and things in the present that are at the forefront of the individual's awareness and may impede them from resolving underlying worries. It is essential to work with the individual from a person-centred theoretical perspective while applying Gestalt therapy skills and learning to support the individual to move at a reasonable pace that is sufficiently comfortable to support gentle challenges that will enable the client to move their process forward from a place where they may be emotionally stuck.
When a client is challenged and responds favourably to their difficulties, I believe that CBT can be used to treat cognitive dissonance and discover the client's fundamental belief system, which is the underlying assertion on which their conscious existence is founded. I believe that this will then allow the individual to feel confident enough to begin addressing the issues from their upbringings or from the moment where trauma occurred.
As an integrative psychotherapist, I am not restricted to any one field of psychological therapy and will be driven by the needs of each client. Depending on the needs of the client, I may also use imagery and transpersonal counselling in this area.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
