About me

Thanks for visiting my page:

Hi, my name is Andrew, I'm an accredited psychotherapist with over 18 years of clinical experience. Are you feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or stuck?

Finding the right therapist can make a big difference. Gaining a deeper understanding of yourself and your situation can lead to a sense of relief, feeling lighter, empowered, and more in control.

I specialise in helping clients overcome anxiety disorders, relationship issues, and addictions, using proven therapeutic approaches. If you're in the Crouch End or Muswell Hill areas of North London, I offer in-person sessions.

While some clients find therapy is about self-discovery, others seek to actively change aspects of their lives that aren't working. This change-oriented approach is where I specialise.

Areas of expertise:

Do you struggle with anxiety? Anxiety disorders are my area of deepest expertise. For more than 18 years, over 70% of my clinical work has focused on helping clients overcome them.

I can help you manage a wide range of anxiety disorders, including:

  • Health anxiety
  • Panic attacks and panic disorder
  • Social anxiety
  • Intrusive thoughts
  • Generalised anxiety disorder (GAD)
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

Anxiety can also manifest in work performance or situations where you feel judged, exposed or like an imposter. I can help you develop coping skills and strategies to manage these anxieties and improve your overall well-being.

The link between anxiety and assertiveness is well-established. If you struggle with anxiety, you may find it difficult to express your needs clearly, leading to feelings of being taken advantage of or unheard. This can contribute to low self-esteem, depression, and feelings of guilt or shame.

I also specialise in addiction recovery, helping individuals overcome substance use (alcohol, drugs, food) and behavioural addictions like gambling, and pornography. I bring years of experience working in both NHS and privately funded treatment centres, ensuring I can tailor my approach to your specific needs.

Beyond anxiety and addiction, I also offer support for relationship issues, whether you're seeking individual guidance or couples therapy.

How I Can Help You:

I believe everyone has the potential to heal and change. Having worked with a wide range of clients, I've seen this firsthand and it fuels my passion for therapy.

I use a blend of evidence-based techniques tailored to your needs. This may include approaches like CBT, ACT, and solution-focused therapy.

The person-centred approach, which emphasises authentic listening and a safe, supportive space, forms the foundation of my practice. Many clients simply need a space to be heard and understood without judgment.

Overall, I work in an integrative way, drawing on the techniques that will get the best results for you.

What to expect:

Therapy starts with getting to know you. Our first session will be an assessment to understand your reasons for seeking counselling, your background, and your goals for therapy.

This initial session also helps us decide if we're a good fit to work together.

Therapy sessions typically occur weekly, but we can tailor the frequency to your needs. We'll regularly review your progress and collaboratively decide when it's time to end therapy.

Private Healthcare Insurance:

Good news! I am a registered provider of counselling and psychotherapy with several insurance companies, including WPA, Cigna Healthcare, Vitality Health, Axa PPP, and Aviva Healthcare. This means the costs of seeing me may be included in your cover.

Treatment for patients with other insurers may also be covered. Please check with your insurer if they are happy for you to work with me.

Training, qualifications & experience

Alongside my private practice, I have worked in private clinics and a third sector charity providing psychotherapy to NHS clients suffering from mental health issues in GP surgeries across North London. I provide clinical supervision to trainee and volunteer counsellors, as well as providing counselling training to the organisation’s clinical staff. I am also experienced in supporting clients who use the Twelve Step model of recovery.

Accreditation:

I am a fully accredited member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and am also a member of the Federation of Drug and Alcohol Professionals. My clinical approach is deeply rooted in the codes of ethics laid out by these two governing bodies.

Prior to my career in counselling, I worked in alcohol policy and strategy within local government. In this role, I helped design and commission services delivered by the NHS. I trained health providers including GPs in basic evidence-based interventions for harmful drinkers.

Qualifications:

My qualifications include an MSc in Addiction Psychology and Counselling (LSBU), diplomas in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Hypnotherapy (Greenwich University and LCCH), and a Counselling Certificate Course (Goldsmiths, University of London).

I attend continuous professional development courses to deepen my practice and expand my skills. For example, last year I completed a British Psychological Society-approved Certificate in Clinical Supervision, and more recently I attended a training looking at Enhanced CBT for eating disorders.

Member organisations

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.
