About me

Hi, I'm Tom. I work mostly with neurodivergent people using the person-centred approach to therapy.

This approach is not about labelling, analysing or diagnosing you – and it's not about teaching you skills or setting homework.

It's about releasing your natural ability to grow and find your place in the world, even if that's not where other people say you 'should' be.

I am neurodivergent myself, which you may find means I understand some feelings that other people don't.

You may want to work with me if:

  • You are, or think you might be, autistic or ADHD. Exploring what this means for you is a deeply personal task but it helps to know you're talking to someone who faces similar challenges.
  • You feel like an outsider, or someone who doesn't belong. I know what it's like to feel different to the people around you. You may find this makes it easier to talk to me about your own struggles to fit in, especially if you are LGBTQ+ or an ethnic or religious minority.
  • You're unhappy in your job or career. I have worked with many people in this situation and bring my own experience as a career changer. Often there are deeper issues at play, and the changes we most need to make are within ourselves.

You may not want to work with me if:

  • You are looking for a therapist who will teach you skills or set you homework. I am all about helping you find your own answers.
  • You don't want to work online, or can't find yourself a safe and private place each week where you won't be disturbed.

My training and how I work

I am a qualified therapist and counsellor (it's the same thing) with three years of professional training and five years of experience. I am also a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy, the country's largest membership body for therapists.

My training is in the person-centred approach, which is all about accepting you as you are, in a way that is radical and transformative. The heart of my training was about becoming an authentic, trustworthy person who strives to understand himself, so that I can offer you a safe relationship where feelings and needs can be expressed without fear of being judged.

How long will we work together for?

That will be your choice. I have worked with some clients for several years, and with some for just a few weeks. I will be happy to be your therapist for as long as you find our work together useful.

How to book a session with me

Email me using the button on this site, or via the Contact Me page on my website. Let me know a little about what you are seeking help with, plus what times would suit you for a 50-minute introductory session.

Training, qualifications & experience

  • Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling (CityLit)
  • Certificate in Therapeutic Counselling (CityLit)
  • MA Politics, Philosophy & Economics (University of Oxford)

Before working professionally as a therapist, I volunteered for five years for the charity Counselling Initiatives in north London, offering long-term therapy to people on low incomes. In my previous career I was a journalist and editor.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

I work online, usually over Zoom, in weekly sessions of 50 minutes each. Because I work online only, you will need to find yourself a safe and private space where you can talk to me without fear of being overheard or interrupted. If Zoom is not an option for you, I can use Skype, WhatsApp or Google Meets instead.

Our first session will be 50 minutes like any other. I will begin by explaining the key things you need to know about how therapy works and I may ask one or two questions if there are things I need to know based on what you have told me before we meet. The rest of the session will be free-form, and we will focus on what you want to talk about and what has brought you into therapy.
