About us

Tilehouse Counselling is a charity that provides professional counselling in Hitchin and North Herts, working strictly within The British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) ethical framework. We offer a confidential service for young people aged 13 to 18 and affordable counselling for adults with income under £40,000.

Our service offers face-to-face and telephone and video counselling.

Our counselling centre is based in central Hitchin and has six comfortable, private counselling rooms. We have rooms that are wheelchair accessible.

Counselling can be short term or ongoing for up to a year. The counselling we provide is integrative, drawing on skills from psychodynamic, person-centred and cognitive behavioural methodologies. We are able to incorporate creative play techniques with our younger clients. Our counsellors are skilled at using psychodynamic principles such as facilitating self-exploration, examining emotional blind spots, identifying negative behaviour patterns and understanding complex relationships.

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

We have verified that at least one professional at this organisation is registered with the relevant professional body.

Further information

People come to counselling for all kinds of reasons. The kinds of things you might want to address might include:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Self-esteem and confidence
  • Relationships
  • Drug, alcohol and food-related issues
  • Abuse and neglect
  • Self-harming and suicidal thoughts
  • A traumatic experience like abuse, violence, or a significant change or loss
  • Health including sexual health
  • Bereavement and loss
  • Sexuality and gender identity
  • Bullying, racism and sexism
  • Work stress

What you tell your counsellor is confidential, and you can expect what you say to be treated with sensitivity, respect and discretion. However, in order to ensure the quality of counselling, all counsellors have regular consultative support in supervision. Identifying details of individual clients are witheld.

The only circumstances in which confidentiality would be broken is when a counsellor considers someone to be at risk of serious harm. Ideally, and in the majority of cases this is done with a client's full knowledge.
