About me

Often we turn to therapy when we are faced with problems we can no longer carry alone. No longer feeling at home within ourselves, we feel called to reconnect with who we are.

When we experience a ‘loss of self’, a painful rift emerges within the psyche. We feel severed from meaning, purpose and joy. This loss can be caused by any number of things - relationship issues, challenging life transitions, grief - and can be experienced as any number of symptoms: depression, anxiety, self-destructive behaviours. It can also be caused by the past invading our present, in the persistent resurfacing of old psychological wounds and traumas. We become frozen in a particular psychological state, unable to fully heal and move forward.

Therapy is unlike other interpersonal relationships in that it offers a place of unconditional acceptance and non-judgement. It is fundamentally a process of observance, where we listen carefully for what is being revealed through our thoughts, feelings and memories.

When we encounter distressing or complex feelings in life, often our instinct is to distract or resist. Through therapy, we learn to ‘go with’. To understand the value of our problems, and to recognise painful emotional states as messengers from the psyche that are calling us to name, confront and integrate whatever is afflicting us.

Through quieting the rational mind and allowing our emotions to speak, we may then begin the process of untangling psychical knots and making sense of our inner world.

Training, qualifications & experience

Before opening my private practice, I worked as a volunteer therapist at The Monastery's Sanctuary of Peace & Healing in Gorton, Manchester.

My approach is primarily informed by person-centred theory. The aim of PCT is not to direct or diagnose, but to invite you to draw on your own intuition and self-knowledge to illuminate the way forward. This means attending to the emotional processes unfolding in the here-and-now with empathy and acceptance.

I also have an interest in psychodynamic and psychospiritual frameworks, and allow these to influence my own therapeutic philosophy. I am fascinated by dreams, shadow work, and the way in which listening to the unconscious can shed light on the transpersonal as well as our own hidden depths.

As Jung wrote: "In each of us there is another whom we do not know. He speaks to us in dreams and tells us how differently he sees us from the way we see ourselves."

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
