About me

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)
  • Relationship (Couples) Counselling
  • ADHD Therapy & Support (ADHD Certified Clinical Services Provider)
  • Outdoor 'Walk and Talk' Counselling
  • For Individuals and Couples

Welcome to Avon CBT & Psychotherapy, a counselling practice which is guided by over 20 years of helping people in difficult and often stressful situations. I have worked operationally in the Armed Forces as a Commissioned Military Chaplain; the NHS as an Emergency Department Registered Nurse; the Police; the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI); as well as teaching in schools and a university. I bring the empathy, training and skills acquired from this extensive experience into my counselling practice.

I provide therapy to individuals and couples from around the world, working flexibly to accommodate the needs of family life, business travel, work shift patterns and armed forces deployments. Specialising in CBT and Relationship Counselling, I am able to assist with a broad range of individual and relational issues, such as Anxiety and Phobias; Depression, Abuse and Trauma (PTSD); Communication and conflict patterns leading to relationship difficulties; as well as recovery from affairs. I also have significant experience of working with neurodiversity (particularly ADHD), understanding the challenges this can bring to our closest relationships, self-esteem, work and family life.

I know how daunting it can feel to be seeking counselling support and the importance of knowing that you have found the right therapist to work with. I founded Avon CBT & Psychotherapy on the values of Integrity and Compassion and my priority is to provide a safe, warm and non-judgemental space to calmly work through the difficulties or anxieties which may be impacting your experience of life or relationships.

The Counselling Journey:

I aim to make therapy as easy for you to access as possible, offering a flexible online booking system to suit your schedule. With appointment times ranging from 30-90 minutes, depending on your needs, I can deliver therapy face-to-face in my purpose built counselling room, online or whilst walking outdoors on local woodland routes or coastal footpaths.

Following a thorough assessment, we will work together to develop the most effective plan to address your needs. This could include identifying bespoke counselling goals, which enable us to measure your progress and change throughout the process of therapy. If needed, I am used to modifying CBT interventions to help make them more accessible or helpful for neurodivergent individuals, e.g. those with ADHD or Autism.

I recognised early in my career that one style of counselling will not suit everyone, so I can also provide a less structured counselling approach (Person-Centred Counselling) for those who would prefer this to CBT. I am also qualified to provide Mental Health First Aid Training, Stress Management Coaching and Health and Wellbeing Coaching to individuals and organisations. I am registered as an ADHD Certified Clinical Services Provider with Evergreen Certifications (USA).

I have benefitted myself from therapy and genuinely believe that it can help us to overcome difficulties which have persisted for years. My aim is to make this experience possible for others, as I support individuals and couples facing a wide variety of issues.

If you would like a conversation to see whether I may be able to help you, please get in touch.

Training, qualifications & experience

Adults:

I am a university trained professionally registered therapist, experienced in working with adult individuals and couples.

I studied Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy (CBT) at the University of South Wales on their post-graduate training course.

I completed my training as a Relationship Counsellor with Relate, a national organisation providing relationship therapy.

I have taken coaching courses in Stress Management Coaching and Health and Wellbeing Coaching at the London based Centre for Coaching and am insured to coach adults and young people.

I have completed significant training in the treatment and management of ADHD, qualifiying as an ADHD Certified Clinical Services Provider.

My initial therapeutic training was in Person-Centred Counselling, taught at Network Counselling in Bristol.

I draw on these different training approaches to provide the right form of therapy for each individual, rather than assuming that one counselling method will work for all.

I am trained to deliver Outdoor 'Walk and Talk' Counselling, for those who enjoy being outdoors or who find talking whilst walking a more helpful experience.

A Diploma in Online Counselling has equipped me to provide therapy via Email and Instant Messaging (Web chat), for clients who would prefer this counselling approach as an alternative to my Face-to-Face, Phone or Webcam service.

I am a Mental Health First Aid Instructor, accredited by Mental Health First Aid England.

Teenagers and Young People:

With over 8 years experience of school pastoral management and classroom (PSHE) teaching, I can coach older teenagers to help them develop the skills, practical tools and emotional resilience needed to manage stress and look after their physical health and mental wellbeing.
