About me
I am a creative arts therapist and have a special interest in and significant experience of working with people living with the impact of trauma, using a somatic (body based ) approach. I offer a warm, down to earth, non-judgemental and empathic approach.
Whether you are facing current challenges in your life or dealing with the impact of past events, it can really help to have someone outside of your everyday life to talk to who can support you.
As everyone's needs are different and unique to them I work with you to find out what you need, what you want to get from therapy, and what approach best suits your needs. My job is to be alongside you, to support and facilitate you, and to work in a way, and at a pace, that is right for you.
Starting therapy can of course bring up difficult feelings when you may already be feeling distressed and perhaps isolated. You may feel anxious about talking about personal issues; or you may feel that you should be able to sort things out on your own but are struggling to do so. If you have experienced trauma in relationships it may be difficult for you to trust another person.
Trust is a vital part of the therapy relationship and something that is built over time, so I believe it’s very important to begin by talking about any concerns you have, and by helping you to feel as safe as possible. We'll talk together about what you need for that to happen, so that we can then focus together on the issues that are troubling you.
With this in mind I offer everyone a free first session no obligation session so that you can see whether you would like to work with me and ask any questions you have. Please email or phone me to arrange an initial session or for further information.
The way I work
I use an integrative person centred approach. This means that as well as my core training as a creative arts therapist I draw on Trauma therapy training and other approaches including Compassion Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and Mindfulness.
As well as us talking together, as a creative arts therapist I can offer a range of creative approaches to help you to explore issues that may be difficult to put into words. An example of this might be using drawing, clay, sand tray work, or movement work, to show how you are feeling about a particular issue, which we can then reflect on together.
Even when sessions are by phone or online using creative methods to express feelings and explore issues may be possible.
If it feels appropriate I will offer you the opportunity to work creatively if you want to, but how much you choose to is up to you.

I also believe that giving information can be an important part of empowering you, so if you feel this is helpful, our work can include exploring psychological information and skills that can help you to understand yourself and resource you in daily life. This might include, for example, skills in managing emotions, dealing with conflict in relationships, or trauma symptoms such as flashbacks, nightmares, dissociation.
