About me

Welcome, I am Shannon, an experienced, qualified Psychotherapeutic Counsellor (MNCPS Accred.) in Transactional Analysis. For over a decade I have worked with people to achieve positive change.

My private practice The Space Between Counselling provides a space to explore what may be causing you difficulty, harm or distress in your daily life. There may be a space between where you are now and where you want to be.

I offer both short-term or long-term therapy from welcoming, confidential spaces in Horam and Hove or Online. I primarily work with individuals aged 14 and over, and also offer group work or reflective practice groups. I have specific specialism, and additional training, in working with Trauma and with young people.

What can you expect during our initial telephone consultation?

A warm welcome! We will talk at a mutually convenient time and this initial consultation is for you to ask me any questions that are important for you to know before meeting me in person; there is no charge for this. I will also ask you a few questions about what you are looking for from therapy to check that I am the right counsellor for you at this time & explain a little about the therapy I offer.

What can you expect from the first therapy session?

This is about us settling into the space together and really forming an idea of what it is you are looking for from me, as your therapist, and from therapy in general. I will ask you more questions than usual, to ensure I know enough about you to be able to work with you safely and ethically.

What can you expect in general?

I offer a warm, open, creative and exploratory space.

In Transactional Analysis we work to three core ideas:

People are OK - this means that I will treat you with respect and compassion, at all times; even when it may be hard for you to find this within yourself.

People can Think - this means that we work together, as partners - your voice will be heard and valued in the space we share.

People can Change -  this means that I see therapy as a change process - we look to work with patterns of behaviour, to establish why they exist and how you may want to change them. I will support you to achieve the growth and change you are looking for.

We will work together to create a space which feels safe and secure to allow for the growth, support  and challenge that is all part of counselling.

What is important to know about my work with Young People (aged under 18)?

I am currently the Lead Practitioner for the counselling provision at Plumpton College (via As You Are Charity) and have worked with young people in a counselling role for the past 3 years. I hold a current DBS along with a Level 2 Safeguarding Certificate (updated April 2024).

In my work with young people I endeavour to work in partnership with parents/caregivers offering short review sessions every 6 weeks to check-in on therapy progress and any concerns. The first telephone call will be with you directly, and the young person if possible.

If you would like more information on me and how I work please visit my website or contact me directly. You will receive a warm welcome.

Wheelchair user access
Wheelchair user access

Wheelchair-accessible premises should have step-free access for wheelchair users and individuals who are unable to climb stairs. If a Counsellor's premises aren't step-free, they may offer alternative services such as telephone/web-based appointments, home visits, or meeting clients in different location, so you can choose the option that suits you best.

You can contact the Counsellor to discuss the options available.

Under the Equality Act 2010 service providers have a duty to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that individuals with disabilities can access their service. You can read more about reasonable adjustments to help you to access services on the CAB website.

Both premises I offer face to face therapy are wheelchair accessible; with Horam additionally offering a disabled parking space directly outside.
