About me

Over my working life as a Counsellor I have come to the conclusion that the most important part of what is called the Therapeutic Relationship is just that – the Relationship between me as the Counsellor and you as the Client.

I see my role as a Counsellor as mostly about being your Cheerleader. Ok so on occasion I might ask you some tough questions; I might ask you to ponder some challenging thoughts; I might ask you if you feel ready to go deeper but I am never going to dictate to you where you should go or what you should do but I will endeavour to be alongside you every step forward and every step backwards. My hope is to provide you with a secure base from which you can explore your world and build your own secure base.

I am a BACP Registered Counsellor and although I trained in what is called Person Centred Counselling my work with Addictions, Substance Abuse, Trauma and Bereavement has required me to train in and integrate aspects of a number of other Therapy styles into my work.

What is Counselling

Counselling isn’t just about major life issues.  Sometimes we just need someone to listen for a while; sometimes we just need to get something off our chest; sometimes we need to tell someone something we can’t say to those who are closest too us. Perhaps one session with a Counsellor will do, perhaps many more, perhaps you will find that Counselling isn’t right for your situation. Counsellors are not the answer to everything; we are not a magic wand. Perhaps we should be called Well Being Facilitators.

My desire is to sit with you, to listen to you as you explore your inner world. To reflect back to you what I am hearing of your inner world, so that you can better understand what it is that is driving your daily experience. Understanding brings choice and choice facilitates change.

About Being Human

I believe that we are complex, creative beings both fearfully and wonderfully made and that in essence we are primarily relational beings. How we have learnt to do relationships and how we have experienced relationships lead to our prime motivators; passion and pain, the stormy seas of our inner world. Relationships build us up and bring us down as we run back and forth through the whole realm of relationship building.

How we experience others and how they experience us can become the driving force behind how we experience ourselves. How we relate to ourselves and how we relate to others co-exist like bone and marrow.

If it is relationship that causes our inner turmoil, then it is relationship which can ease that turmoil. That is the core of the therapeutic relationship. My aim is to help you build a relationally secure base from which you can explore, change and develop your inner world.

The past cannot be changed, what can be changed is our connection to the past and when we change the connection to the past we can change its control of the present. Difficulties may arise because some of our connections might be unknown to us. Disconnecting from traumatic and painful events and/or their emotional content is a basic fail-safe that we use to survive the event. Whilst our pain may be blocked and hidden away and the emotions denied, each is still present in the stormy sea of our inner worldview.

The thing that we most need is possibly the thing of which we are most terrified – emotional connection with another human being and emotional connection with self. Have you ever tried forgiving someone? Have you ever tried forgiving yourself?

Counselling can provide the framework to build a new view of the world and our relationship with it, by providing a secure base to explore how to rebuild the broken and reassemble the shattered aspects of who we are.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
