About me
About me
Hi, I'm Josiah. I'm a qualified integrative counsellor and founder of Off Beat Therapy. I am based in Surrey and currently have mostly evening online availability with some flexibility - please get in touch to discuss.
You can expect me to be an authentic, real human before anything else. I believe counselling is about connection, humour, difficulty and everything in between.
I offer a lived experience perspective when working with neurodivergent, trans/non-binary and queer clients. Although I may not have shared experience with every client, I bring a strong understanding of the experience of 'otherness' and discrimination.
About my clients
I work with many different kinds of clients with issues ranging from anxiety, depression, feeling sad or worried, family/relationship issues, trauma, abuse, identity, stress, loneliness, discrimination and oppression.
I have a particular passion for providing services to those who feel uncomfortable in, or excluded from mainstream services. If you're someone who worries that parts of your identity - such as your race, religion, sexuality, gender identity, neurodivergence or disability - will be an elephant in the room, or all a counsellor can focus on, I hope to provide an alternative experience where you can feel comfortable discussing these matters in depth. I aim to create a space where every aspect of you is visible, welcome and talked about, but also acknowledges that these aspects of your identity aren't the only important things about you.

Training, qualifications & experience
I qualified with a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. I also hold a multidisciplinary degree with a focus on child psychology and counselling, and a qualification in Counselling Children in Schools.
I attend regular continuous professional development training and am a member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP). I am also a 'Friend' member of the Black, African and Asian Therapy Network (BAATN).
My career has spanned many fields including youth work, sexual health, diversity training, education, childcare and charities. I have worked for several counselling agencies, particularly with the trans community and adult survivors of childhood abuse.
Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

The work I do around identity includes, but also goes beyond, topics such as questioning gender identity or sexuality, coming out, transition, navigating diagnosis, experience of discrimination. I also support with issues such as dating, parenting, working, ageing and simply living with the impacts of oppression; managing in today's increasingly hostile climate; the intersection of all identities such as race, religion, culture, gender, sexuality, disability, age etc; and all those times in life where identity weaves in and out of life's issues.
