About me
Welcome! My name is Matthew Shoesmith and I appreciate you taking the time to visit my page.
I don’t know what has brought you here at this stage, but rest assured I will do all I can to help you! Do you feel alone in your struggle, weighed down by sadness or anxiety? Are you struggling to manage your emotions, or looking for more of something?
I’d like to tell you a little bit about me and how I can help.
My clients tell me I work from the heart, with a healthy balance of professionalism and being human. I pride myself on being welcoming, friendly and genuine, as both a counsellor and as a person.
I’m an integrative therapist, meaning I’m trained in a number of evidence-based therapies and work with you in tailoring the counselling to your needs as an individual. I’m humanistic and massively person-centred in my approach to counselling and to life! I believe everybody is capable of fulfilling their potential and I aim to provide you with the necessary conditions to do so! I’m looking to empower you to develop the skills and confidence needed to ignite positive change.
There’s even room for humour!
I’ve dedicated myself to helping others through the process of healing, change and development in counselling and psychotherapy for over 7 years, and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future.
I’ve worked in a number of mental health settings with adults and young people from diverse backgrounds, and with a range of difficulties. I’ve counselled students in a further education college, managed the service itself and supported many clients via a local counselling charity, where I continue to volunteer. I am also developing training, workshops and seminars to deliver to colleagues in the counselling field. I live locally and have supported communities in West Yorkshire for many years, including people in Huddersfield, Brighouse, Halifax and surrounding areas.
I am equipped and qualified to work with, but not limited to, depression, anxiety, grief, anger management, abuse, self-harm, loneliness, stress, trauma, suicidal thoughts, relationship difficulty and identity crisis. In doing so, I work closely with the ethical framework of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. I also have experience in mentoring and coaching.
I know the road ahead can look daunting to say the least, but I hope to work alongside you so you might discover a future filled with hope.
I can offer short, medium or long-term counselling on a weekly basis for both adults and young people. The support is collaborative as we explore and process your world together, but I facilitate change at YOUR pace.
Of course, there’s no obligation. I think it’s important you’re given the opportunity to decide whether or not I’m the counsellor for you! I like to offer my clients a free 20-minute chat over the phone, online or in person, to help you make that decision.

Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).
Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.
Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.
All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
