About me

Hello & Welcome!

I am a qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor with a postgraduate diploma in Counselling from the Psychosynthesis Trust in London, accredited by the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP).

Why are you here and what are you looking for?

Have you been thinking to try counselling but postponing making that call? Are you going through a challenging time in your relationships or feeling anxious, under the weather, worried for the future? Maybe you are under a lot of stress at work or in your personal life and feel exhausted all the time, or you might be experiencing the pain of loss and bereavement.

If any of this resonates and you would like to talk but finding it difficult to take that first step while wondering how therapy could help you, if at all, know that you don't have to do it all on your own.

I offer individual and couple counselling sessions on a long or short-term basis where you will feel valued, respected, listened to. Together we will look at the issue you bring, at your pace, in a safe, confidential and no-judgmental space.

My approach to Counselling is an integrative approach, this means that I combine more than one modality to suit the needs of my clients.

Whether I work with individuals or with couples, my goal is to understand the challenges that you experience, to help you observe the issue from different perspectives with curiosity rather than concern, to support and encourage you in this journey.

You can find more information about how I work and how I might be able to help you,  following the link to my website: www.mariacau.com

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified psychotherapeutic counsellor with a postgraduate diploma in Counselling from the Psychosynthesis Trust in London, accredited by the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP). I am a registered member of BACP which sets the standards for Counselling in the UK and the Ethical Framework for practitioners.

I’ve been living and working in London for almost 25 years. I am fluent in English and Italian, therefore able to hold my therapy sessions in the language you feel more comfortable with.

I work collaboratively, as I believe clients are the true experts of their own functioning. I am a “down to earth” therapist who can support you to address your concerns and issues in a safe, confidential, and no-judgmental space.

Prior to training as a psychotherapist, I worked in Banking and Telecommunications for over fifteen years. My first degree was in Economics at the University of Cagliari, Italy. During my working years in the corporate world, leading a team and liaising with management at various levels, I experienced first-hand the pressure on high-performing professionals and the impact this has on people’s lives and particularly their personal relationships.

Relationships, whether romantic, between friends, family, in the workplace or our internal relationship with who we are, is the area I am most passionate about.

My background and personal journey allow me to appreciate and connect with clients because they feel ‘I’ve been there’, I can relate to their challenges and work with them towards the changes they choose to make in their lives.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

Whether I work with individuals or couples, for me, the most important factor in therapy is the relationship between me and my clients. Together we will look at the issues behind the challenges you are facing, exploring ways to help you question your assumptions, face your blocks, enabling you to understand more about yourself, focusing on moving forwards with more meaning and purpose.

I work on a weekly basis with clients, either for a specific period or on an open-ended basis depending on your needs and challenges at that time.
