About me

Right now, it is possible you are feeling overwhelmed by recent or past events and experiences or your life feels 'stuck' in some way.  Perhaps you feel rather lost, despairing or are struggling with low self-worth.  It may not be clear why you are feeling the way you are and for many of us, having a trusted person who will deeply listen to you, without judgment or advice-giving, is a rarity.

Finding a counsellor is likely to prove daunting and can raise lots of uncertainty, such as whether this form of support will be beneficial.  There are also practical demands to consider, not least your time and money.  My own experience as a client reminds me that being vulnerable can feel intimidating, exposing, and even scary, requiring an abundance of courage and trust in the other.

I am a BACP registered humanistic counsellor offering short-term (typically 6-12 sessions) and longer-term support for adults.  Central to the humanistic approach is the therapeutic relationship, the vehicle for co-creating a safe, confidential space in which we can consider how it is to be you in the world.  The essence of our partnership is our shared humanity and whatever you choose to share with me will be received with openness, empathy, and sensitivity.  I will also take your guidance on the pace and depth of each session.

I am passionate about working collaboratively and creatively, and reflecting on your struggles within your broader context.  Fundamental to my role is the facilitation of your self-awareness and self-compassion which can be thought of as 'shining' the light into the corners' to enable you to see more of yourself.  Developing this deeper insight of your unique experiences, tendencies, values, and motivations can feel really empowering.  I would hope that new possibilities and perspectives will be revealed over time, inspiring you to make informed and meaningful decisions for your future.

In short, having the opportunity for your story to be witnessed and validated through this intimate relationship deserves to be thought of as a long-term investment, with the potential for healing, growth and transforming your way of relating to yourself, and loved ones.

Having read my profile, I hope you are one step closer to finding support which feels right for you.  Please feel free to contact me via email or phone with any questions.

I am committed to my ongoing personal and professional development and access regular supervision.  I have a keen interest in a range of specialisms, including developmental trauma, grief, and addiction and draw on various theoretical understandings and approaches in my work, depending on the needs of the client.

Within the charity sector, I have worked extensively with adult carers, and I am currently offering face-to-face counselling for survivors of cancer and their families for a national charity.  For many years, I worked in primary healthcare as an adult speech and language therapist, experience which supports my counselling practice.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
