About me

I’m a psychological therapist who has helped people to recognise their strengths, understand their experiences, work through emotional problems, and make sense of their responses to difficult situations.

I’ll help you make connections to understand present difficulties and life experiences. I can bring different perspectives to your situation and help identify ways of coping. I will tailor therapy to your unique needs and preferences, acknowledging your individuality, strengths and context.

Most of my experience has been working with people who have experienced abuse, trauma, neglect, discrimination, or adversity. I’ve listened to and supported them in understanding their feelings, improving self-belief, feeling less anxious, improving their mood, finding ways to relax, asserting boundaries, and doing the things they’ve held back from. I do not exclusively work with people who have experienced trauma, and I have worked with a range of mental health difficulties. I can also support individuals focusing on personal development and growth.

My therapeutic approach is pluralistic, which means I respect the diversity of experiences and viewpoints and don’t believe there is one single solution for everyone. Instead, I value your experience and preferences, recognising your uniqueness and finding what works for you to personalise therapy. I seek to collaborate, combining my psychological expertise with your perspectives.

I apply various techniques and theories to help me build a shared understanding of your experiences and what I can offer you. This includes cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and humanistic therapies.  I also incorporate compassion-focused therapy (CFT), which aims to help those who struggle with shame and self-criticism by building self-compassion. I use Schema-informed therapy to address the developmental origins of problems, using relational and experiential interventions and target coping styles that perpetuate these difficulties.  By offering you choice and being authentic with you, I hope to establish an environment in which you can begin to feel comfortable working with me.

How to begin working together

Click the 'Email me' button. It would be helpful to know your availability and some brief information about why you're seeking therapy, but you do not need to go into detail.
You're not obligated to continue, but if you wish to work with me, we will arrange further sessions after the first appointment.

Training, qualifications & experience

I studied psychology for my first degree, then worked in retail management before starting my Master's in Pluralistic Counselling and working as a support practitioner for a mental health charity. Since then, for the past 8 years, I’ve worked in different settings, providing therapeutic support in NHS, the third sector, a private organisation and as a team leader for a supported self-help service. Most of my training and post-qualified work has taken place in organisations specialising in trauma, particularly sexual abuse and childhood trauma, but I have also gained experience working with various mental health presentations. I’m in the final stage of training for my Doctorate in Counselling Psychology. My research projects have focused on Armed Forces veterans and trauma.

Education:

  • BSc(Hons) Forensic Psychobiology
  • Graduate Certificate in Counselling Skills (COSCA)
  • MSc Counselling (Pluralistic approach)
  • PGCert Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
  • DPsych Counselling Psychology (in progress)

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

What happens in therapy?

In our first session, we will discuss what has prompted you to come to therapy and consider your focus for sessions. We won’t necessarily explore or resolve difficulties in-depth at this point, but it can help us progress in therapy. You are not obligated to continue with me, but if you wish to continue, we will set an initial number of sessions to meet and review. I may use some questionnaires relating to your health and wellbeing that we can revisit in future sessions to help us evaluate whether therapy is effective for you.

The following sessions will be aligned to important themes relating to your difficulties and experiences and your focus for therapy. If we think they will be helpful, we may include some activities for you to do independently between sessions. I understand it can be difficult, but I welcome dialogue throughout the process about how you are finding working with me.

Ending therapy is an important part of the therapeutic process as it can provide closure and give you a chance to reflect on what has happened during our time together. A planned or agreed ending would involve us focusing on these points.
