About me
I offer counselling for children (age 9+), young people, adults and couples and Supervision in Bristol (BS15 8DB at www.sycamorehousebristol.co.uk), in Stroud and online
Why come to counselling?
There are many and varied reasons why people come to counselling; You may have feelings of anxiety or stress, relationship issues, bereavement or you may have come to a point where things are not feeling great and seeking support may be a way to help clarify some of your thoughts and feelings? Speaking with someone who is objective and in confidence, someone who is not from within your friendship group, family or a work colleague. In counselling session I aim to offer the time and space where you will be truly heard, in a confidential, empathetic and non-judgmental environment?
Taking the first steps towards counselling can be challenging and I aim to make the first steps as reassuring as possible.
Why come to me?
My therapeutic experience has been gathered over many years, through my private practice, working within an educational setting, and volunteering for charities, plus my own personal therapy and personal development. I believe that this experience has enabled me to have a good solid understanding of the many and varied challenges that life can hold.
Having the time and space to focus on your needs, life decisions and concerns may be an opportunity to find some of the answers or resolutions of how to move forward. Sometimes family, friends or colleagues are not the people we can turn to and an independent time and space could enable you to focus on your concerns and issues.
What counselling can offer is a time and opportunity for you to explore your concerns in a safe, non-judgmental and confidential setting –a time for you.
Finding the right counsellor for you is important and it can be difficult to take the first steps. Initially I suggest we meet for half hour to see what has brought you to counselling and what it is you are wanting and hoping to explore. Alternatively you may prefer a complimentary telephone consultation. An initial meeting or consultation is also an opportunity for you to meet me and for you to gain an idea if I am the counsellor for you. I am able to offer counselling short term, up to 6 to 12 weeks or longer.
Why not give me a ring on 07422504578 or email me at kirstileljakcounselling@gmail.com to find out more about coming to counselling.

Supervision
Therapeutic supervision is fundamental when working within the therapeutic field. Not only as a requirement by regulatory bodies such as BACP or UKCP, but also as a means to support you as a therapeutic practitioner.
I believe that supervision offers a place for reflection for you and your work, where you can feel heard and supported. My aim is to hold and cultivate, with you, a space where we can develop a working alliance between yourself and me; where you feel comfortable and supported so you are able to bring all of your clinical work; the work that you are proud of and the work where you feel there has been a level of challenge and curiosity (and noticing what aspects of work one chooses not to bring into supervision can bring a wealth of insight and exploration); nurturing an environment where there is the potential for growth and inquiry. I aim to actively listen and engage with you in your therapeutic development and growth, while remaining and encouraging a place of stability and consistency.

Member organisations
BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred). Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA). Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision. Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training. All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
Accredited register membership
The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information
I work integratively, which means that I have an understanding of different models of counselling and will work with you to tailor which approaches would benefit you the most. This may be solution focused or more explorative, focusing on issues that are presently in your life situation or issues from your past.
It is also possible to use creative techniques if this is felt to be right for you. For instance painting, drawing and sand sculpture.
I will endeavour to hold a space for you where you can speak confidentially and feel safe, respected, heard and without judgment.
