About me

Hi, I'm Katie and I'm a humanistic-integrative counsellor and psychotherapist who believes that everybody, regardless of difference, deserves to live an authentic and fulfilling life. I understand however, that life can be very distressing and the challenges we face can often get in the way of living a life we truly want and need. We can also find ourselves being completely unaware of why life feels this way and can sometimes leave us feeling lost and unable to move forward.

I believe however, that emotional distress is a very normal response to adverse circumstances - past or present - and that everybody has a unique way of experiencing. I take pride in normalizing individual human experience without labeling life's challenges as 'disorders' or 'illnesses'. This means I am interested in the person you are, and all the nuanced experiences that make you, you. It also means that I commit to fostering a trusting and non-judgmental therapeutic relationship that goes beyond any preconceived psychiatric labels. This can help you gain a sense of freedom, empowerment, autonomy and control over your life - even if it feels very difficult to imagine right now and has done for some time.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified counsellor and psychotherapist offering online counselling. I have over 7 years of experience supporting people who have been diagnosed with autism and those with learning difficulties. I have also provided specialist mental health mentoring to adult university students and counselled at two different charities. My work experience has led to my ongoing passion and respect for human difference and celebration of diversity.

Qualifications

I have completed a BSc Honours degree in Psychology and Clinical Psychology at the University of Lincoln, and have completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Counselling and a Masters in Counselling at York St John University.

My research and publication

For my Masters, I completed a year-long research project where I explored transgender clients’ experiences of their therapeutic relationships with their counsellors. This research project and further training has enabled me to develop additional understandings of the challenges that some people may face who identify within the LGBT+ spectrum and the impact these challenges have on mental health.

I chose this research topic as I feel very passionate about promoting LGBT+ inclusive and affirmative practice and to further expand my skills as an LGBT+ affirmative practitioner. I also felt this research topic was important for me to immerse myself in as someone who is cis-gender, to communicate my commitment and acceptance of human experience and difference.

My approach

My humanistic-integrative approach to counselling means I draw on a number of approaches that really honours the unique human you are and respects how you experience the world. This also means that I adapt my ways of working to your individual needs and your own pace.

My approach can include a variety of methods such as asking open questions, focussing on and exploring emotions, using metaphor and imagery, exploring bodily sensations/somatic experiences and supportive challenge. This list is not exhaustive as I appreciate the natural fluidity and flow of sessions, as what you need from me may alter from moment to moment and session to session and will be unique to you.

I can also help you explore the systems that you fall part of in life such as relational, social, political and existential dimensions and how they can impact you.

A personal message from me to you

It's such a privilege to sit and converse with clients. I learn so much from the richness of their inner experiences. I enjoy taking time to reflect between sessions to further develop my insights into the complexities of being human. It allows me to reflect personally and professionally. I really don't think there is anything more valuable than learning from a fellow human-being.

Next steps?

I understand that choosing counselling as the next step in your life can be a very daunting and scary experience. Therefore, I offer a free 20-minute online consultation where we can discuss the challenges you are facing and to see if we would make a good fit for your counselling journey.

Get in touch today and I will respond to you as soon as possible.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.
