About me

Hello, I'm Katie. I understand that making the decision to begin therapy can feel daunting. Once you start your search for a therapist, it can feel challenging to find the right person for you. I hope this information helps you to learn a little bit about me and what you can expect from therapy.

When I faced difficulties in my own life, I decided to get help from a therapist. The experience helped me to relax; life felt a little lighter and the future felt exciting. For me, therapy is about getting in touch with who you are and making decisions that feel right for you. By developing our self-awareness and gaining insight into our thoughts, feelings and behaviours, we can develop the freedom to change what isn't working for us.

I share my experience because I’m passionate about normalising the experience of seeking help. Even when we desire change, welcoming new information and changing our mind-set can feel overwhelming. It can take time to feel comfortable talking to a stranger, but there is no rush. We will work together at your pace and comfort level.

What I offer

I offer one to one psychotherapy and counselling services to adults aged 18 years and over at my private practice in Bramhall, Stockport. Face to face appointments take place in a private garden office and video appointments are offered via the online platform Skype.

My aim is to provide a nurturing, open and honest space, where you can talk about your difficulties without judgment. I will treat you with warmth, compassion and respect, welcoming you to speak freely without fear that your story will be repeated elsewhere. Together, we will find a way to make the changes you desire.

Why therapy?

People seek therapy for different reasons. You might be here because you have faced a significant event. Perhaps you are suffering with anxiety, stress, low self esteem or depression, or you are feeling sad and disconnected from life. You might not even know exactly what it is that is troubling you, but something just doesn't feel right. Experiencing difficulties is normal, but that doesn't mean that you have to struggle alone or reach a crisis point before asking for help. Considering therapy is a great first step towards a positive and healthy change.

My approach

The main modality I work in is Transactional Analysis (TA), which is a talking therapy. TA explores an individual’s personality and how it has been shaped by experiences, decisions and beliefs, particularly those experiences from childhood. I will explore the links between your past and your present to understand how you relate to yourself and to others. This insight can help you to identify what isn’t working for you and the changes you wish to make to your life.

I will encourage you to take an active role in therapy, so I won't tell you what to do and I can't simply fix your problems for you. My role will be to facilitate and support you to make sense of your experiences, using sensitive questioning and honest input to help you to gain in-depth insight into your thoughts, feelings and behaviours. This process can help you to uncover your own strengths and develop inner and outer resources to deal with the ups and downs of life.

How to get started

I offer a free 20-minute consultation on the phone or online, via Skype or Zoom. This gives us the opportunity to meet one another and for you to tell me about what has brought you to therapy. You can ask any questions and assess if you feel comfortable with me. I will let you know what you can expect from therapy and check that I am able to offer the help that you need. At this point, we can proceed to arrange a further appointment, or you can have some time to consider what you would like to do. There is no obligation to continue.

About the practice

My practice is based in a garden office, which is separate from my home with private access. It is located half a mile from Bramhall village centre, close to the Manchester Eastern Link Airport Road (SK7). It is also within easy reach of Woodford, Hazel Grove, Cheadle Hulme and Handforth. It is easily reached by bus services, train and car. Free street parking is available nearby.

Getting in touch

If you like the sound of my approach, please get in touch for your free consultation. I am not always able to answer the phone, so please leave me a message and I will get back to you as soon as I can. Feel free to text, WhatsApp or email me  - whatever works best for you.

Career background:

After graduating with a degree in Textile Design, I began my career in buying and product development. Working in this industry was a great experience, but I realised the type of work just didn't fit with my personal values. A career change led me to work as a Volunteer Coordinator in a social housing organisation, helping individuals to improve their confidence, skills and employment prospects through volunteering. I now work as a qualified counsellor at my private practice in Bramhall.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
