About me

The decision to seek out someone to talk to about your problems and concerns takes courage and can feel quite intimidating. I offer a classic clinical psychology approach either by video based therapy or in a natural outdoor setting. We can agree any combination of online video call therapy sessions and outdoor 'walk and talk' based sessions according to your preference. For many people, the opportunity to 'walk and talk' outdoors can feel more comfortable and lead to a more helpful experience (more about this at the end of this section). Alternatively, I have extensive experience providing stand alone video call based therapy.

What do I offer and how is it different from counselling?

'Walk & Talk Psychological Therapy' offers you friendly, flexible, psychological therapy with an experienced registered Clinical Psychologist. My training as a clinical psychologist, coupled with an extensive practice experience and an additional psychotherapy qualification will enable me to tailor our work to your specific needs.

Although sharing many characteristics of counselling and psychotherapy,  clinical psychology differs in that the foundation of our work will be based on a thorough understanding of the problems you are bringing (a formulation). The formulation becomes our guide to how to resolve your difficulties and how to help you make changes in your life (if this is what you choose). It will be an active, practical approach, in which I will encourage you to not only reflect on you experience, but also to try out new ideas and techniques in your everyday life.

Outdoor and Online Sessions

We can use a flexible combination of outdoor and online video based sessions to suit your needs and support the work we are doing. Working outdoors offers many benefits but also requires some additional considerations which we can discuss during your initial free telephone consultation. I will have responsibility for your safety and the confidentiality of our work when outdoors. For this reason I will recommend that we meet in public park locations that I have had the opportunity to assess beforehand.

If you have any further questions please feel free to email or text me, or ask me at our initial telephone consultation. I look forward to hearing from you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a qualified Clinical Psychologist, recently retired from the NHS, where I offered individual psychological therapy to people experiencing a wide range of psychological distress and difficulty for almost 30 years, (including, anxiety, depression, traumatic experiences and issues of adjustment and loss). I also hold a Diploma in Personal Construct Psychotherapy and Counselling, and have been practicing with this approach for 25 years. Additionally, I have experience of working with Cognitive Behavioural Techniques, alongside an interest in Compassion Focused Therapy and Mindfulness based approaches. My approach often draws upon multiple therapeutic models and techniques, tailored to the needs of the person I am working with.

HCPC
Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)

The HCPC are an independent, UK-wide health regulator. They set standards of professional training, performance and conduct for 16 professions.

They keep a register of health professionals who meet their standards, and they take action if registered health professionals fall below those standards. They were created by a piece of legislation called the Health Professions Order 2001.

Registration means that a health professional meets national standards for their professional training, performance and conduct.

Other areas of counselling I deal with

Psychological distress rarely fits into a neat diagnostic pigeon hole. Clinical Psychology and Personal Construct Psychotherapy together offer a broad spectrum approach to psychological distress which is not tied to a specific disorder or problem. As such you can expect a tailored approach irrespective of what problems you initially bring.
