About me

Hello, I'm Esmay and I'm a qualified (BACP registered) counsellor, working in a person-centred way. We all have times in life where things become confusing or challenging and this can sometimes lead to a feeling of being alone and a sense that nobody around you really understands what you are experiencing.

This is when therapy can help you to feel heard, better understand what's happening in your relationships and support you in moving towards positive change in a way that suits you.

You may be tired of feeling lost, depressed, anxious, worthless, ashamed, overwhelmed or angry. Something could have happened in your life which has left you feeling stuck or unsure about how to move forward. Sometimes you just need someone who really hears you without judgement or criticism, so that you can find your way through difficulties in life.

The therapy I offer is warm, confidential and you can be sure that I will really listen, to support you in tackling the issues that are making like difficult for you.

By allowing you time to pause and explore what is going on in your head we can work together to make sense of where you are now. With acceptance and compassion, I can help you to explore how you reached this point and support you to feel empowered in living life the way you choose to live it.

I am a trauma informed counsellor working in a person-centred way. This means that I will offer you a warm, confidential, reflective space where you are able to safely explore any issues you are experiencing.

Whatever you would like to bring, we can work through your thoughts and feelings together, to make sense of where you are now and reflect on any changes you would like to make.

Sessions are your time and will move at a pace that you are comfortable with. I am a calm, compassionate and attentive practitioner who will provide you with a space to pause and explore, so that you are able to find a way forward.

What can I help with?

I offer a free introductory phone call, in which we can talk about what you are looking to gain from therapy and see if you would like to work together. It's essential to find a counsellor who you feel you can trust and open up with, so you can gain a sense of this without any obligation to continue.

I have use of two private and secure rooms in HD3 and HD7, easily accessible by public transport or car.

During my practice to date I have supported clients with issues concerning but not limited to:

  • General anxiety
  • Social anxiety
  • Depression
  • Relationship difficulties
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Anger management
  • Work stress
  • Birth trauma and baby loss
  • Traumatic past experiences
  • Low self-esteem
  • Anger issues
  • Loneliness
  • Life changes (e.g. divorce or menopause)
  • Bereavement by suicide

Training, qualifications & experience

I have gained experience as a volunteer counsellor for a local mental health organisation, supporting people in the community with a wide range of mental health issues. I’ve also been a Samaritans listening volunteer which involved being a source of support for people experiencing suicidal thoughts or feelings, or who had found themselves at a low point in life and were just in need of someone to listen. I undertake regular training as part of my continuous learning and development.

  • BSc (Hons) Psychology (BPS accredited)
  • Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling
  • Certificate in Trauma Informed Practice

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
