About me
Do you get road rage? Do you swear when angry? Has anger damaged your relationship/s? Do you suffer angrily in silence? Is your anger causing you depression?
Anger is a symptom and often has its deep roots in childhood experiences, especially in situations where there was a withdrawal of love or emotional neglect. The foundation of our emotional regulation and expression is often laid during our early childhood. We have emotional needs for affection, attention, and validation. When these needs go unmet, anger can become a coping mechanism. As children, we learn by observing the behaviour of those around us, especially our parents and primary caregivers. If we witnesses aggressive or anger-driven reactions, we may adopt similar patterns of behaviour as we grow, thinking it's a normal way to deal with feelings. For those of us who are taught to suppress our feelings, or hide our vulnerability, we can develop anger as a way to shield ourselves from feeling hurt or rejected. This emotional suppression can lead to a buildup of anger over time.
If you got this far, you recognise the need to make a change in your life and want to show up differently to the people you care about but most importantly, to yourself. We can’t get rid of anger, it is part of our humanity, but I can help you get to the root cause of your anger. Understanding the connection between childhood experiences and adult anger can be a crucial step in addressing and resolving anger issues and to help you choose a different path.
There is nothing 'wrong' with you. If you had to adapt to your childhood environment by being aggressive, you learned that that's what got you out of a particular situation. For a period of time that may have protected you, now it's reached a point where this behaviour is no longer serving you.
I am anger management specialist and registered art psychotherapist. I nurture your ability to grow your own internal resources so that you can navigate life's challenges with greater awareness, self-esteem, and resilience.
