About me

I am an experienced BPC registered Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist and HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist with a private practice in Darlington providing Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy to adults in the North East of England.

Life can be a struggle at times, and the past few years have been particularly difficult for many of us. Often, we can find a way through problems ourselves, but sometimes it’s crucial to acknowledge when you need help. This might be due to a life event pushing you beyond the limit of your capacity to cope, or when you feel stuck in a painful and familiar pattern, unknowingly trapped repeating experiences from your past. It’s important to know that the person you turn to for help is an experienced, highly trained professional, adhering to a stringent code of conduct. As a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC), I am held to a clear code of ethics and professional conduct, ensuring my clinical practice is of the highest standard.

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy draws on the concepts and theories of psychoanalysis to help you understand and resolve your problems by increasing awareness of how your past can influence relationships and experiences in the present. It differs from other therapies and counselling in aiming for deep seated change in personality and emotional development.

As a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, I offer weekly sessions or, if required, more intensive psychotherapy that involves attending sessions several times a week, to understand and work through many problems, including those related to anxiety, depression, trauma, abuse, relationships, stress, low self-esteem, bereavement, life transitions, or medically unexplained symptoms. Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy can also be effective when you are experiencing a more general sense of dissatisfaction in life.

For further information, please visit the BPC website at bpc.org.uk.

Training, qualifications & experience

Both training and experience are important factors to consider when faced with an overwhelming array of therapists and counsellors to choose from. I have worked in the NHS providing therapy to individuals with severe and enduring mental health difficulties for over 17 years. I’ve also been responsible for staff supervision, consultation, and training. Prior to qualifying as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist, I worked as a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist.

I am a clinical member of the North of England Association of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists (neapp.org.uk). I also provide supervision to psychiatry and clinical psychology trainees, and lecture on a BPS Accredited Clinical Psychology Doctorate course.

BPC
British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC)

The British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC) is a professional association, representing the profession of psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

The organisation is itself made up of fourteen member organisations and BPC accredits the trainings of its member organisations. An individual who qualifies from one of these trainings is then eligible for entry into the BPC's register.

BPC registrants are governed by a code of ethics, a policy of continuing professional development, a statement on confidentiality and a complaints procedure. The BPC is a Member Society of the European Federation for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy in the Public Sector (EFPP). Accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.
