About me

Hello, my name is Abigail.  I am a Chartered Counselling Psychologist (HCPC registered, BPS chartered) and Psychotherapist (registered member of BACP). I have over fifteen years of counselling experience.

I understand that seeking psychological support can be challenging at times. I work in a collaborative, flexible, client-centred and integrative way. I tailor my therapeutic approach to suit individual needs, goals and preferences and offer a warm and welcoming approach, where we will work together at a pace that suits you. I encourage clients to play an active role in therapy, which I believe is key to making progress.

My approach to counselling or therapy includes listening, reflecting, asking thought-provoking questions and providing tentative interpretations. I offer individual therapy, which can be short, medium or long-term, depending on individual needs. I work with the person and their specific needs to support them in achieving their aims and goals. I can help you improve your mood and boost your confidence by focusing on daily habits such as sleep or eating patterns. On a deeper level, I can aid you in exploring and unpacking significant life events to encourage you to understand your thought patterns, why certain behaviours get repeated and how to make positive life choices and changes.

Seeking psychological support to explore, manage and make sense of life's challenges and complexities can facilitate understanding, growth and change. I aim to help, enable and empower each client to develop their skills in dealing with difficulties.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am a BPS and HCPC Chartered Counselling Psychologist and Psychotherapist. I hold a Professional Doctorate in Counselling Psychology, MSc in Counselling Psychology, and a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and Health Studies. I have completed training in the Humanistic model, the Psychodynamic approach, and the Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Being an integrative therapist means I am trained in various approaches and draw from these different approaches to shape our work together to meet your needs. I adhere to the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy’s (BACP) Code of Ethics.

I have extensive experience providing individual therapy to adults in a range of community settings, including NHS primary care services and Higher Education institutions. I have over fifteen years of experience working in mental health with young people and adults from diverse backgrounds. I have worked with individuals experiencing difficulties with anxiety, depression, trauma, loss, bereavement, addiction, relationship issues, domestic violence, racial trauma, university-related issues and work-related stress. This is not a complete list of issues I can provide help with. Sometimes it might be difficult to name the actual issue, and this is where talking therapy can help clarify the issue and bring about change.

I undertake regular clinical supervision which I believe is essential in maintaining good clinical practice and allows me to be accountable to another clinician. I continue to enhance my knowledge and skillset in the psychological field by engaging in Continuing Professional Development (CPD) events and training.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
