About me

Hi, I'm Yvonne and I am a registered play therapist with 18 years of experience working with children, and young people alongside parents and carers.

Often when parents/carers come to me for help, they have tried various advice/strategies and they don't know where else to turn.  Sometimes,  they have never heard of play therapy  and can even be a bit skeptical that it can work, but when they see the difference it can make to their child they are often surprised [and delighted]

"I was not sure that Play Therapy would help our family. I could not have been more wrong. Jamie took to Yvonne very quickly and looked forward to visiting the playroom every week.  He allowed himself to open up in a way he has never done with anyone else. I believe this is why we have seen the results we have. " [child's name has been changed]

For children/young people. Play therapy helps children and young people understand muddled feelings and upsetting events that they haven't had the chance to sort out or process properly. It helps them make sense of their world and can enable them to share how they are feeling with or without words using play and other creative means to communicate at their own level and at their own pace in a safe place.

Parents and Carers. I know how difficult and sometimes exhausting it can be trying to get help for your child/young person and I am committed to offering you support as well as your child. Your child is part of a family, and you know your child best, but I will support you and offer suggestions you can use at home and together we will support your child.

Training, qualifications & experience

Before training as a Play Therapist, I worked in various different settings, and within different roles which I believe has given me a broad view of children’s and young people’s needs and issues.

My first role was in residential childcare working with looked after children for 3 years before  moving on to work for 5 years in a homeless project for young people 16 plus,

After that, I then moved area to work in a disadvantaged community in Kilmarnock. Working within the local school and the community. I built up relationships with the children, young people and families there. This led me to set up a charity within that community to develop the work and we eventually were able to employ 12 staff, It was whilst managing that Project, I applied and was accepted to train as a play therapist supported and encouraged by the management committee of the project. I was the first student ever to be accepted without a first degree due to my background experience of working with children and young people.

Due to this varied professional work background, I believe I have drawn from my many experiences, working alongside children, young people and parents/carers. Gaining knowledge and understanding that doesn’t just come from textbooks and training. This has led me to be a reflective as well as an experienced therapist. This background has also enabled me to have gained essential life skills and insights which I have found enhances my work with children and young people.

For the past 11 years, I have been based in Stirling, [and Falkirk for a number of years] where my referrals have come from: -

Local schools, Social Work, Women’s Aid, Kinship Carers, Home Start and Stirling Council.

However, a number of my referrals have come through parents/carers simply sharing with other parents/carers how play therapy has helped their child.

I have a Postgraduate Diploma in Play Therapy

I am a full member of the British Association of Play Therapists and work according to the BAPT Code of Ethics

  • I hold a PVG [Disclosure]
  • I am fully insured
  • I have ongoing supervision

I continue to attend and be involved in ongoing training and education to enhance my understanding as well as further develop and be open to new creative ways of working with children in therapy.
