About me

After 21 years in mental health settings (18 within the NHS) and various trainings, a warm and connected relationship remains at the heart of what I do.  Embarking on counselling and sharing our vulnerability takes a lot of courage and this deserves sensitivity and respect.  With an awareness of this, I'll work with you in forming a therapeutic relationship and offering a safe and confidential space to work through what it is you choose to bring.

My main training is in an integrative approach. This means that I will draw on various models and approaches to fit you as an individual. I am informed by approaches such as attachment based work, attunement, mindfulness, body oriented approaches and the way our past can impact on our present. Alongside these I have also done training in CBT and EMDR (for PTSD) psychotherapy. In addition to this I have 10 years experience in time limited work within GP surgeries throughout Cardiff and the Vale.  This has allowed me to work with a variety of people and a variety of difficulties. I have also worked in more specialist clinics such as Mother and Baby mental health and Traumatic Stress (PTSD).

People come to counselling or therapy for a variety of reasons; some may want to build their awareness of themselves or a particular issue, some to process a trauma, work through a loss or bereavement, through a life transition or perhaps just with an awareness that they are unhappy in their life. Whatever you bring, above all, I bring a non-judgemental approach and the aim to help you to explore, aid coping and help you to work through what it is you are bringing to therapy.

Mentorship

I am offering mentorship for trainees or newly qualified counsellors. Having managed and supported teams of counsellors within the NHS, I have experience of offering practical and emotional support and guidance to other counsellors and therapists. If you would like to know more about this then please do get in touch.

Coaching

I am offering Coaching packages to professionals. Please get in contact if you'd like to learn more about this and discuss your needs.

Training, qualifications & experience

My original degree was in Psychology and Philosophy. I then did post-graduate training in Integrative Counselling and then EMDR psychotherapy.

Over my years of working in the NHS I have worked in a Mother and Baby mental health unit, Psychology Research (first in PTSD and then in end of life research), as a trauma therapist in a Traumatic Stress Clinic (PTSD), a Counsellor in GP practices and as a Lead Counsellor within a counselling service. As well as working in the NHS I have worked for Mind mental health charity, Cardiff University and in private practice.

I have done a variety of training courses to continue my professional development covering various topics such as mindfulness, compassion therapy, trauma focussed work and bereavement.

Registered / Accredited

Registered / Accredited

Being registered/accredited with a professional body means an individual must have achieved a substantial level of training and experience approved by their member organisation.

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
