About me

Are you, or someone in your family struggling? I am Sinead, a BACP registered Integrative Psychotherapist and Counsellor (MA), specifically trained to provide therapy for children, young people, and families. Children and young people often find it challenging to understand and make sense of emotional, social or behavioural difficulties they are experiencing, and this can impact their relationships at school, college, university and can lead to family issues. These challenges can show up in various forms including; anger issues, social anxiety, health anxiety, feeling overwhelmed, low self-esteem, depression, school avoidance, distorted eating or self harm.

I offer a warm, safe, confidential and nurturing space where difficulties and distresses can be shared and explored using various therapeutic techniques, and where new choices and ways of managing can be made. As well as offering free space to talk, I draw on a wide range of creative interventions such as sand tray, art, music, drama and play, where appropriate, to help what can often feel inexpressible with words alone to be both expressed and worked out. My therapeutic approach is integrative, meaning I use the best approach suited specifically to your or your child's needs. . I am passionate and dedicated to helping build resilience and develop essential emotional skills that will serve you or them well in the future.

I have experience of working with a wide variety of presenting issues across all age ranges. I have full professional insurance and an enhanced DBS.

What to Expect

After an initial phone consultation, which gives us an opportunity to briefly discuss your worries and concerns, I arrange to meet with you, depending whether you are referring yourself or your child.

I'm a young person and I want to refer myself for counselling:

If you are over 18 then you may self-refer by phone or email.

If you are under 16, depending on your circumstances we may have to seek parental consent or consent from whoever is your legal guardian.

If you are under 16, I would recommend that you speak with your parent/guardian(s) about wanting to explore counselling and if they agree, I am happy to hold a Consultation with you.

Depending on your age and ability to provide consent for therapy, it may be appropriate to begin therapy without the parent/carer. This will be discussed during our Consultation and addressed on a case-by-case basis. I will then book you in for an Initial Assessment, which will last 50 minutes.

I’m a parent and I want to refer a child or young person for counselling:

After an initial phone consultation, I arrange to meet with parent(s) to discuss concerns further and to take a thorough history. This meeting allows me to gather information to see what may be useful in supporting your child. If we agree to do so, I will then book your child in for an Initial Assessment, which will last 50 minutes. For younger children, or those anxious about coming, we can discuss ways to make the session less overwhelming. During this time, we will explore whether and/or how best, we can work together.

Please do feel free to get in touch should you have any questions or would like to explore us working together. I look forward to hearing from you.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

This therapist has indicated that they belong to an Accredited Register.

Further information

Practice Description:

Sessions are 50 minutes in length, are on the same day and time on a weekly basis. Sessions typically run following the school calendar, on a half termly basis and are open to regular review.

Work can be both long or short term depending on your needs.

Where I work with children, I meet regularly with parents to think carefully together about how best to support you and your child.

Sessions take place in the den, a dedicated room in my garden that is equipped with a range of resources including imaginative play toys, sand tray, sensory toys, art materials including collage, paints and clay and also a range of games such as Connect 4, Dobble, and Uno.

It is a safe space, free from intrusions to meet weekly. Everyone is encouraged to explore the space and make use of the materials in any way they wish.
