About me

My name is Simon Favilli. I specialise in addiction therapy/counselling and have done so for the past 15 years. I work with individual addicts but I also work independently with family members and affected others.

Whilst my speciality is in addiction therapy, I can also offer counselling for a wide range of issues including Anxiety, Depression, Grief, Bereavement & Loss and Relationship issues. This can be offered for the Individual or as a Family Counselling session.

Taking the first step in addressing any issue can feel daunting, especially one as far reaching and impacting as addiction, so I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the strength and courage it has already taken you. Change is now possible as you have already proven to yourself you have what it takes!!!

In order to help you feel more comfortable about your decision to address yours or an others issues with addiction I will tell you a little bit about myself.

I qualified as an Integrative counsellor in 2008 and spent the past 15 years working as Lead Counsellor in Drug and Alcohol rehabilitation centres for Acorn Recovery Projects within Greater Manchester untill October 2022.

As a fully qualified counsellor, and registered member of the BACP, my career working in both residential and community based rehabilitation centres has afforded me the opportunity to work with individuals (in 1-1 and group therapy sessions), their families and closely with local authorities. I have also delivered psychosocial interventions to inmates in HMP Manchester from 2009 - 2014 to help them address and understand their addiction, behaviours and the links to criminology.

I specialise in issues directly associated with and surrounding addiction including addictive behaviours such as substance abuse, gambling, sex addiction, and self harming. Helping people overcome an addiction is my speciality, whether it be an addictive substance or addictive behaviour, I have the knowledge and experience to help as a result of the work I have undertaken and being in recovery from addiction myself for the past 18 years.

If I can do it , You can do it.

Addiction is now a classified medical illness with far-reaching consequences. My experience in this field has shown me how destructive it can be. I've helped people to understand what drives their addictive behaviour - the cause - and given them the life-tools to make a positive change.

Helping people break free from their addiction is a vocation and a passion I hold dear and being part of that process is a true privilege. Using a combination of my experience and therapeutic techniques I have been given the opportunity to witness individuals, couples and family members make positive and life improving change.

If you or a loved one is suffering from addiction, I'd be more than happy to provide you with a free initial telephone consultation.

Addictions I work with:

Alcohol
Drugs - illicit - including cannabis
Prescribed drugs/Over the counter drugs (such as codeine)
Gambling
Sex addiction
Love and relationship addiction
Eating disorders
Co-dependant relationships
Smoking
Compulsive over eating
Self harm
Shopping addiction
Work addiction

Families affected by addiction

I use an integrative counselling approach based on Gerard Egan's "Skilled Helper" framework. This framework allows me the freedom to use a wide range of therapeutic approaches and solution-focused interventions such as CBT,  Gestalt, Person-Centred, Psychodynamic, NLP and Motivational Interviewing. My aim is to build a relationship within which, you, as the client, can truly feel heard and understood. I aim to listen empathically with acceptance and without judgemen

TESTIMONIALS

Addiction/Dependency has a ripple effect and therefore has a negative impact on family’s lives. That is exactly what happened to mine and as the mother my feeling of loss was immense.
I visited Simon on a number of occasions during this period of my life to try and make some sense and understanding of what exactly was happening. That is exactly what happened and my knowledge and compassion around addiction increased however the wounds for me were far deeper. He created a space, the right venue, the right atmosphere the correct approach that enabled me to slowly let down the barriers. He allowed me to set my own pace and yes there were some difficult conversations, events I really struggle to look at and revisit but it was always done in a sensitive, professional and compassionate manner. The techniques taught to “live in the moment” are what I continue to employ on a daily basis and have enabled me to get on with living My best life!
The sessions with Simon have had such a positive impact on both mine and my extended family’s life. I love his transparency and honestly, it’s a rare quality.

Wendy, Jan 2020

Simon counselled me through a very difficult time in my life. Through a build up of events triggered through a family members alcohol and drug dependency I had put up a barrier to deal with the situation I had found myself in. This barrier stopped me from working , socialising and showing any emotion as I saw this is a weakness. Simon listened, asked questions, empathised but was honest and open with me from my very first session. Over several weeks we began to chip away at this barrier, I could say and feel things I had never allowed myself to before. I was so dubious of going for counselling but I can honestly say it has made me who I am today! Confident , out going and always remembering to look after myself first - thank you Simon.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am trained in individual counselling and group work up to and including a post-graduate diploma in counselling.

I have trained up to certificate level in counselling and supervision. I currently clinically supervise a team of counsellors in a community drugs project and have done so for several years.

I have completed a Transactional Analysis 101 certificate in July 2020 to further improve my techniques and clinical range.

I have recently completed a certificate in "Calming the anxious brain" in October 2020 to improve and update my understanding and skills of using neuroscience when working with clients suffering from anxiety, panic and worry.

I also attend regular supervision to monitor my professional practice in order to keep counselling a safe and confidential space in which to explore and heal difficult feelings and issues.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.
