About me

My name is Sam and I am a fully qualified Person-Centred Counsellor/Psychotherapist. You may be dealing with a difficult situation in your life and that may be causing stress, depression, anxiety, and you may be confused, sad, angry, lost and feeling completely alone in your experience. Or maybe you lack confidence or are just not where you would like to be and don't know how to move forward. Whatever the issue, you do not need to face it alone. At times we may need to lean on someone for support to work through our problems and that is ok. Now in my late thirties and going through my own personal struggles of divorce, being a single parent, experiencing anxiety, I am passionate about helping and supporting individuals through their distressing times. I create a confidential, fully accepting, safe space for clients to work through, understand and process any unpleasant feelings/experiences and create more self-awareness, finding the resources needed to move through life more comfortably.

I offer one-to-one counselling sessions online, over the telephone or face-to-face, which will take place in my private and confidential therapy room located in Bryn, Ashton-in-Makerfield.

The therapy I offer is Person-centred therapy, which is a type of talk therapy that sees the client as the expert of themselves and therefore is client led. This means the client talks about what is troubling them and I support them in their journey of self-exploration. Its sometimes difficult to understand what counselling really is like and how it helps, so I describe it like this; imagine your life as a jigsaw puzzle, having pieces that don't fit, it doesn't look or feel right, these pieces that don't fit are causing distressing symptoms (depression, anxiety, stress, dissociation etc), but you are not sure yourself what or why these pieces are there, so we slowly break it all apart. We explore all the parts (the good, the bad, the ugly), then we piece the puzzle back together, bit by bit, in a way that makes sense and feels right to you. With this new self-awareness, you can better your situation, improve relationships and lead a more satisfying life. I do understand however, that each client is unique and may require something different from therapy. They may need some extra support or ways to break old thought patterns, therefore I adapt my sessions to meet the needs of each individual client where necessary.

If you would like to solve your own puzzle and feel more pieced together then please get in touch for a free 15-30 min chat and you can determine whether I am the right therapist for you.

Training, qualifications & experience

I started out volunteering as a mentor with young offenders at Targeted Youth Services in Wigan. This experience, along with my own life experiences, sparked a passion inside of me to pursue a career in helping others and this is where my journey to become a counsellor began. From here I did my Level 2 & 3 certificates in counselling skills at St Helen's College and then went on to do a 3 year undergraduate degree at the University of Salford, where I came out with a first class honours degree. I have had the privilege of working with many children and adults over the years that have had a range of presenting problems. I absolutely love what I do and it is my passion to help people of all ages to find their voice and reach their full potential.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Further information

Having experienced therapy myself, I understand it can feel really daunting to find the right therapist and then attending the first session. The first session is always the hardest with the fear of the unknown, not knowing myself or what to expect, but rest assured I am a warm and welcoming individual and there is no pressure or expectations on you to know what to say. All you need to focus on is attending the session and everything else will just happen naturally. Thank you for taking the time to read my profile fully, I really appreciate it.
