About me

Hi, my name is Ruth and I am an integrative counsellor working from a purpose built therapy room based in Kingswinford, West Midlands.

Have you ever felt like you are going round and round with the same difficulty and never finding relief? You may feel like you are climbing a mountain and as soon as you near the top, you trip and fall back to the bottom of the hill again?

Sometimes in life it is "ok", not to be "ok" as we sometimes lose our resilience to life difficulties. Counselling can be a really effective tool in learning a bit more about ourselves and why we do the things we do. Understanding ourselves better helps us navigate life's challenges better.  I can help to provide clarity to a difficulty you may have in a safe and confidential space at the pace you wish to go by.

I use several approaches to the therapy I give and this will very much be determined on you as an individual and what you feel may work for you. Some clients want a directive firm approach, others may want a more relaxed, slow paced approach or maybe you aren't sure what works for you? No problem, we will work that out between us.

Training, qualifications & experience

I am dual trained as a registered Counsellor and registered Nurse.

Qualifications:

Higher Education Diploma in Adult Nursing (5 years spent working in Accident and Emergency Departments)

Specialist Community Public Health Nursing degree (over 9 years spent working with young children and families improving health outcomes concentrating on maternal mental health, postnatal depression, brain development, attachment theory and promoting healthy relationships within families).

Diploma in Integrative Counselling

I come from a Nursing background and have worked in various settings in the NHS for over 15 years and in fact still work as a Nurse Therapist (half Nurse, half Counsellor) within an Eating Disorders Service delivering therapeutic interventions with individuals with Anorexia Nervosa, Bulima Nervosa, binge eating and other non-specific eating disorders.  As well as this I have experience working as a Counsellor within NHS Staff Support Services counselling employees and have also worked counselling individuals within GP practices.

I am a registered member of the British Association of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (BACP).

Most recent continuing professional development:

  • Compassion Focused Therapy
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
  • Dialectical Behavioural Therapy
  • Suicide Response Training
  • Enhanced CBT for Eating disorders

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
