About me

I am an experienced Counsellor specialising in relationship issues. I offer a warm and supportive space for individuals and couples and individuals to find a way through conflict, loss, and life changes; and to feel good about themselves and happy in their relationships.

I understand how hard it is to take the first step to seek professional help for an issue that you feel sad or angry about, or perhaps embarrassed to discuss. However, talking about it sets in motion the wheels of change, and you may be surprised to discover your capacity for resilience and your ability to transform how you feel.

How I can help couples

Counselling can offer an opportunity to find a way through in a relationship that has perhaps become stuck in the rut, or mired in hopelessness, negativity, and mistrust. It is not uncommon for couples to suddenly find themselves with no shared understanding, no hopes for the future, and bogged down in disappointments and conflict. It can be pretty hard to figure out when and how a relationship changed from a loving and companionable one to one of repeated misunderstandings, heated arguments or frosty silence.

Sometimes it is a stressful life event that has brought about the difficulty, sometimes physical or mental ill health such as anxiety or depression.  Perhaps you or your partner are on the autistic spectrum and communication is difficult. It is well established that miscommunication is the single biggest thing that brings about relationship difficulties.

Even for couples who have decided to separate, counselling offers the chance to remain on amicable terms and to parent well. This is hugely beneficial for the future of their children and wider families.

How I can help individuals

Your relationship with yourself is very important, and influences every other relationship you have in life. Counselling can offer a chance to free yourself from nagging feelings of self- doubt, blame, guilt or shame. Many people need help to cope with their depression and anxiety – which is far more common than we like to believe. Some have suffered loss, or are living with anger and resentment. Some doubt their ability to sustain meaningful relationships with their families, friends or colleagues.

Finding a way to manage - and change - how you feel about yourself and your situation is a skill that can be learnt.

Training, qualifications & experience

I have a Masters degree in Relationship Therapy and have worked at Relate for 13 years before setting up my private practice.

I have a Doctoral degree in Psychology which provides me with a very good understanding of human behaviour.

I am trained in Couples Therapy for Depression, which is recognised and used in the NHS for helping couple where one or both partners are living with depression and anxiety.

I am a Registered member of BACP which means that you can be assured that I work within recognised ethical guidelines.

How I work

You can talk to me in the knowledge that you will be listened to without judgment, and all conversations will feel safe and supported. I have trained in, and use an integrative approach which means combining a variety of models and techniques to arrive at solutions that suit you and your particular issues, rather than force you to fit a model.

If you are interested in some of the approaches I combine, read on…

Attachment based – which tells us that how we relate to people or events as adults is influenced by templates formed early in life; and that our early social environment and relationship with caregivers have a powerful effect on our well-being.

Systemic – which tells us that how we think and behave is largely dependant on how other around us are thinking and behaving. These interlocking patterns of communication can sometimes lead to repetitive cycles of disappointment and hurt. Understanding this allows people to make choices about and change their behaviours.

Behavioural – which tells us that the habitual ways in which we think about things or respond to events are learnt over a period of time, and like most habits they can be changed.

Psychodynamic – which tells us that the root cause of some of our ways of thinking and behaving lie in unconscious longings and conflict, and becoming alert to these forces makes for the possibility of change

Compassion focussed - which is based on a basic belief in human kindness, caring, and compassion for the self and others. Developing compassion for the self is a great way to challenge the inner critic and gain happiness and well being.

Member organisations

BACP
British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP)

BACP is one of the UK’s leading professional bodies for counselling and psychotherapy with around 60,000 members. The Association has several different categories of membership, including Student Member, Individual Member, Registered Member MBACP, Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Accred) and Senior Registered Accredited Member MBACP (Snr Acccred).

Registered and accredited members are listed on the BACP Register, which shows that they have demonstrated BACP’s recommended standards for training, proficiency and ethical practice. The BACP Register was the first register of psychological therapists to be accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).

Accredited and senior accredited membership are voluntary categories for members who choose to undertake a rigorous application and assessment process to demonstrate additional standards around practice, training and supervision.

Individual members will have completed an appropriate counselling or psychotherapy course and started to practise, but they won’t appear on the BACP Register until they've demonstrated that they meet the standards for registration. Student members are still in the process of completing their training.

All members are bound by the BACP Ethical Framework and a Professional Conduct Procedure.

Accredited register membership

British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy
Accredited Register Scheme

The Accredited Register Scheme was set up in 2013 by the Department of Health (DoH) as a way to recognise organisations that hold voluntary registers which meet certain standards. These standards are set by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA).
